The Sharks scoring woes continued last night in their 2-1 shootout loss against the Edmonton Oilers. It's been a rough stretch for the Sharks as of late, with numerous factors playing a role in the team's recent lack of production up and down the lineup. Injuries to Martin Havlat and Ryane Clowe have decimated the team's top six, what looked like an unsustainable 5v5 PDO has begun to regress, and the power play has continued to inconceivably struggle despite the talent that hits the ice every night.

To illustrate their recent woes here's a slightly more in-depth look at their play over the last seven games:

What's good to see is that the shot totals haven't taken too much of a hit-- as The Neutral mentioned last night, the Sharks outchanced the Oilers 22-8 overall which is about as good of a game you can ask from a team in a losing affair. Getting one point in a game against Edmonton isn't exactly anything to fawn over of course, but credit should rightly go to Devyn Dubnyk for his performance throughout the tilt.

Dubnyk has always reminded me of an embittered Russian novelist who pours himself a stiff drink of vodka every loneseom night in an attempt to dull the bitter harsh winds of a cold Edmonton winter. The imagery kind of unfolds once you realize he's a young Canadian hockey player, but the "goaltender as a lone wolf" stereotype, Dubnyk's Ukrainian heritage, and his certainly fitting full name all contribute to the cause.

I'm probably projecting memories of the Ilya Bryzgalov Knob Hockey video in there as well for whatever reason, but what are you going to do.

At any rate, the Sharks are certainly struggling right now and there's even greater cause for concern with Brent Burns taking a nasty knee on knee hit last night from Oilers winger Ales Hemsky in an innocuous collision along the boards that turned ugly as soon as it occurred. Burns, who limped off the ice and had to be helped to the dressing room with assistance from Colin White and the training staff, felt better following the game but still has managed to give Todd McLellan pause as to his status going forward.

There's no real telling with these types of injuries-- I remember Dan Boyle's fall last season along the boards looked like it could have ended his season but he didn't end up missing a game, and then Martin Havlat goes and gets himself injured for 6-8 weeks after coming off the bench for a line change. Whatever happens with Burns over the course of the next 48 hours will likely determine the Sharks game plan and outlook going forward; while reports that he left the arena without crutches are definitely positive, you're going to have to wait until more information comes out before exhaling that breathe you're currently holding snug in your lungs.

Whatever happens however, it's unlikely he suits up tonight against the Flames.

With the Sharks trying to get scoring from anyone outside of the magnificent Logan Couture right now, San Jose's upcoming tilt against Calgary presents a good opportunity for the team to give themselves a little push heading into the All-Star Break. We said coming into this Alberta swing that we'd be content with 3 points on the roadie, so locking down a win tonight keeps them on pace with our expectations. Games against the Flames are like eating dry turkey on rye for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon-- enough sustenance to get you through the day, but not enough to get you excited about life in general.

Expect another grinder tonight topped off with a religious conviction to chip the puck in, manage shifts, and win battles along the boards. With the Sharks banged up and likely without the deft puck moving abilities of Burns on the backend that type of matchup is about as good as one they could ask for-- a slow and methodical game that relies on Niemi to do what he has done for the majority of this season is the best opportunity for them to lick their wounds and come up with two points before the break. Calgary's relatively porous ability to keep shots away from Kiprusoff (18th in the League, 30.4 SA/G) and their equally lacking goal scoring ability (25th in the League, 2.41 G/GP) are all indicators that San Jose can still hang in this one even if the goal scoring dries up before our eyes.

They can feel free to cash in at some point of course.

Prediction: Sharks win 2-0. Goals by Couture and McGinn.

Scoring chances

The Sharks lead the league in Shots per game @ 34.7, yet they only average 2.70 goals per game (13th in the league). So does it come down to scoring chances and if so, where is San Jose in that regard?

Even though SJ leads the league in shots per game, they are only ranked 9th in the league in win % when outshooting their opponents.

So in spite of how many shots the Sharks get, I can only surmise that they are not getting enough good scoring chances? Or, could it be the fact that we need to score first to win? When SJ scores first they are 4th in the league in win % @ .789?

Then there is this: When leading after 2 periods the San Jose Sharks are only 21st in the league with a .818 winning %.

As has been said here before, we make the opposing goalie look like an MVP night in and night out. And it’s not like we faced any of these guys last night.

Best goalies in the Western Conference right now: Quick: 21-12-9, .934 save %, 1.93 goals against and 6 shutouts. Howard: 30-10-1, .926 save %, 1.95 goals against and 5 shutouts. Rinne: 27-11-4, .924 save %, 2.39 goals against and 4 shutouts.

scoring chances

One big point seems to be continually overlooked with the Sharks and when one views the history of Stanley Cup winners, it’s a vital stat—-GA! The Sharks GA continues to improve over the season, however, what does the injury to one young defenseman do to it? I am scared to find out. Defense wins cups! It’s a fact. The goals will come, if they keep the shots up and get a big body (missing now) in the crease for the junk. GA is the stat I care about most after total points.

Followed closely by a stat the NHL does not track and should, which is goals under duress (2 v 1, 3 v1, break away & PP goals allowed). Goalies like Thomas win teams the cup based on how their save percentage is in these areas, not just save percentage on overall shots, as great defense can manipulate the hell out of overall shots coming from crappy angles that a monkey can save and push all rebounds out of danger. Yet another stat the NHL does not track, rebounds off shots. Goalies who give juicy rebounds are useless, so track it.

San Jose keeps doing better and better with GA and the Canucks game the other night is the first game in a while I recall anyone scoring more than 2 or 3 goals. Lets focus on that stat. It is THE stat.

Thanks

Plus, with 4 out of the next 5 at home and with 4 games in hand over LA, I think the Sharks will be fine coming out of the All Star break. With any luck BB, RC and TW will all be back for those games and the greuling 9 game road trip that follows. If they come out of that stretch still leading the Pacific, then I see us finishing in the three spot with home ice at least for the first round. After that, all bets are off.

And to your points, the Sharks usually win when they get the first goal, to the tune of almost 79%. They haven’t been scoring the first goal lately and that in part has contributed to their losses.

is TW helping our lineup?

I can’t put my finger on it but this kid just doesn’t impress me. Personally I’m a bigger fan of McCarthy but there seems to be some hype with Wingels, I’m just not a fan.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

Well, we’re throwing him (and Ferriero & McCarthy) out there against either the other team’s #1 scoring line or their containment line, so I’d expect any young player to struggle in those scenarios.

Recently, all we’re throwing Ferriero out there against is other teams #2 scoring lines not #1. McCarthy is usually on the 4th line going against their 4th liners. Wingels is the only guy coming up from Worcester that we’ve thrown out on our first line recently and in the past Ferriero, in my opinion, has done better playing on the top line than Wingels because of his 5v5 scoring abilities. In my eyes, TW is a 3rd liner at best in the NHL. Better chance of giving McCarthy a shot on the top line than Dejardins and Co.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 12:20 PM PST up reply actions

McCarthy has occasionally skated with the top 2 lines, but less so than Ferriero or Wingels.

In an ideal world Ferriero and Wingels would get sheltered minutes so they can adjust to the speed of the NHL. We don’t have that luxury right now due to injuries. So sometimes you’re going to see Winchester on the top line because he at least has shown he can be effective at the NHL level. Other times you’re going to see Ferriero or Wingels based on the matchups.

I like Winchester up on that line more than Wingel’s, Ferriero and especially Dejardins. I think we should give McCarthy another shot up on that line.

quality over quantity

in every aspect of the game tonight is needed. Having Clowe and Havlat out of the lineup is really showing our weakness and keeping us out of that “elite” tier of teams. Besides our top 6 forwards, we don’t really have anyone in the bottom 6 or in Worcester that can step up 10-12 games at a time and produce like other “elite” teams can do. Honestly we don’t have anyone in the system right now that can step up and play with Thornton, Marleau or Couture. The good draft picks we have drafted in recent years have been traded away and I’m not too comfortable with the future of the Sharks.

A healthy Sharks team pumping on all cylinders is still a team I truly believe can win the Cup but right now we need to not point at excuses have guys like Handzus, McGinn and MARLEAU step up for the offense.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 10:55 AM PST reply actions

Mc Ginn

Hit one off of the post last night and played well as usual. Marleau has really picked up the physical aspect of his game during Clowe’s absence. He has a pension for scoring game winning goals and has done okay of late. I think Joe Thornton should be getting more of the blame. If lucky, he shoots one shot per game and needs to shoot more with Clowe and Havlat being out. Although he always looks to pass first, he should also be taking the puck to the net and looking for rebounds with that big frame of his.

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

Thornton

I agree with you that Thornton needs to take more shots but that not necessarily his job. Guys like Patty need to use their speed and shot to score. Its a HUGE plus that Marleau is using his big frame a little more but when you consider that every guy has a role on this team, Marleau is not sticking to his “role” as much as Thornton is.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Who says it’s not Thornton’s job to shoot? The best playmakers in the game – Crosby, Giroux, Sedin, Datsyuk, etc are all also 25+ goal scorers.

Thornton’s game these days is not good anyway you look at it. He’s got Pavs on one wing and Ferriero/Wingels/Winchester/whatever on his other. He doesn’t have two snipers on his wing anymore. Do you have any idea how much space would open up for him if he’d drive the net every once in a while and shoot more often?

There’s some disappointment from a few players offensively this year but he’s at the very top of my list.

by milanahalek on Jan 24, 2012 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

It looks like the other teams are now expecting him to pull up on the half-boards now when he carries the puck in, hence all the recent giveaways. Jumbo is going to have to adapt, because his game has gotten too predictable.

I can’t remember which game it was, but Joe had the puck on the left side, came up, put a hard writers on net that was blocked by the goalie, and Pavs was there for the rebound. That’s the kind of play that should happen more often, especially if you’ve got Ferriero/Wingels/Winchester on your wing. Those guys will have a lot more success crashing the net and looking for rebounds than waiting for the perfect feed from Joe to roof in the far corner with pinpoint accuracy.

@shampeon

by ievans on Jan 24, 2012 12:07 PM PST up reply actions

I said

its not NECESSARILY his job to shoot. Yes he needs to shoot more, I agree, but his main role is a playmaker. Joe had several nice feeds to Pavs and Dejardins last night like has done with Wingels, Winchester, etc who couldn’t put it in. And honestly, Marleau’s role IS to score. He’s got a helluva shot and amazing speed when he decides to use it. Thornton assisted that goal last night and did so on Couture’s PP goal in VAN. He’s still making the plays he’s been paid to do. YES he can improve his game by driving the net and using his frame more but I still believe the onus is still more on guys like Marleau, McGinn, etc.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

The thing is

Joe is a good shooter and can score goals when he puts his mind to it. I think he can do both, shoot and pass. By mixing it up more he will keep the D honest and since two of our top six guys are out, he does need to p/u the scoring slack when he can. That doesn’t mean shoot 9 times like Dan Boyle did last night, but I’d be happy with 3 or 4 good chances. Even one extra goal will make a huge difference.

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

I agree with you.

But dont you think guys like Marleau and McGinn need more than just ONE shot each when we put 40+ shots on goal. Joe shooting the puck more will mix up his game and keep the D more honest but C’mon Marleau is the 3rd leading scorer since 08-09 behind Ovi and Stamkos!! His “role” is to shoot and is to score. Handle that issue first and Thornton’s more shots possibly leading to more goals will be a complement to that.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 12:28 PM PST up reply actions

It's all interconnected

Yes Marleau needs to shoot and score more, but he has to get the puck in a position to score. So if Joe is waiting to pass all the time instead of taking the puck to the net, Marleau can be shut down more easily (especially with Clowe and Havlat out). If Joe shoots more, Patty scores more by cleaning up the rebounds, etc…Just my opinion.

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 12:50 PM PST up reply actions

We disagree on the source of problem.

I also think that its interconnected like you say but I feel the source of the problem (and a place we need to first find a solution to) is Marleau. I think by Marleua using his speed and shooting more will lead our overall offense, including Thornton’s goal. The lines have been kind of mixed up and I don’t expect every player to just magically start scoring goals but I feel the source of the issue here is Marleau’s game more than Thornton’s. You feel that by Thornton shooting more it will open up Patty’s game and I just disagree with you on that one.

We all know Patty is a streaky player and I too should expect that from him but what we need in times like this is consistency. Thank got for Couture right now.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

That's fine

I don’t really care which way it happens, just that it does. I think (as Milan pointed out) both guys need to produce more. After all, these are your leaders and top salary guys. I’ve said before and I still believe that this team will only go as far as Patty and Jumbo take us. Not to diminish the importance of others, because we all know it’s a team game. But those guys need to be out front and have the other guys follow. As Drew Remenda likes to say, “It’s easier to pull on a rope than it is to push on one”.

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 1:05 PM PST up reply actions

Problem is

Playmaker is the ONLY role he’s playing and that’s not good enough w/ the injuries in the top 6. He’s still an effective 2 way player and he’s still an effective set up guy but there has to be more to his game for the Sharks to be able to win.

He was very good last year, 20 goals, physical, hard to play against – he’s not showing much of that this season.

Marleau & Pavelski see heavy PK time and face the highest qualcomp on the team, Marleau has a way bigger ‘role’ than just scoring – which he’s been doing seeing as he’s on a 30something goal pace.

McGinn is on pace for a career year, as a 3rd liner, he’s doing his job.

I like Thornton but I know what kind of player he can be because he shows it every once in a while, he hasn’t been good this year – he’s simply been OK.

by milanahalek on Jan 24, 2012 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

but there has to be more to his game for the Sharks to be able to win.

I think the same could be said about Marleau especially with Clowe out.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe

Marleau’s picked up his physical play w/ Clowe out and his line w/ Couture has been pretty good.

The thing is with Thornton is he is the only player on this team that has the talent to carry a line on his own or to take over a game (obviously not every game but he’s can impose his will on teams when he works at it). He’s not doing that…if McLellan wants to move Marleau back to center I might argue he’s capable of carrying a line as well but that’s hard to do at wing.

Clowe, Pavs, Marleau & Thornton have all underachieved to some extent on the offensive side this year so I’m not putting this on the Thornton. He’s just the one player who can make some minor adjustments to his game that would do wonders for both him and his linemates – play quicker, drive the net & shoot the damn puck.

by milanahalek on Jan 24, 2012 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

I keep waiting for it to happen. Is McLellan telling him what needs to change or is he just waiting for Jumbo to figure it out? How many times have we seen shots on goal that produce rebounds only to find no Shark players in the area and so it gets cleared away. With Clowe out, Thornton needs to be that guy.

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 1:01 PM PST up reply actions

we need a Holmstrom

Maybe Joe is scared to get in front of the goalie, maybe TMAC is telling him to set up behind the net and make a play instead. Who knows? I just want to see some more consistency out of everyone.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

maybe TMAC is telling him to set up behind the net and make a play instead.

McLellan specifically called out Thornton last week say his play hasn’t been at the level they want & that he’s too predictable. McLellan doens’t often call out players by name so that should tell you something.

by milanahalek on Jan 24, 2012 1:09 PM PST up reply actions

bottom line

Thornton needs to raise his game just as everyone else needs to as injuries have hit us. But I think Marleau needs to raise it more, just my opinion.

by 408sharks on Jan 24, 2012 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Thornton does shoot normally. He’s been putting up a streak of consistent 20+ goal seasons.

His stats are down in general, and that’s (to some extent) the reason why that top line is struggling, IMO. He’s neither shooting well, nor setting up plays well.

Here's hoping for a win going into the All-Star break, and TSN's ever-so-exciting trade deadline coverage.

I’m also kinda hoping the give McCarthy a shot at the top two lines tonight… He had a couple of REALLY good chances last night, and given his scoring prowess in Wooster, I’d really love to see what he can do, playing with the big boys.

Hope we get to see Vandermeer, too. I miss that guy.

Mr. Plank

Your silence is deafening! Where do you weigh in on all of this?

What is your opinion on the topic of quality scoring chances vs. # of shots on goal and if or what Jumbo can do to help pick up the slumping offensive output.

What say ye???

by douchebags on Jan 24, 2012 12:56 PM PST reply actions

I think the scoring chances data The Neutral has been compiling is an excellent indicator of who is carrying the play on a game by game level. I’m a big believer in more shots equal more opportunities to score because shots lead to scoring chances and generate rebounds, which introduce a “chaos” factor into the defensive end of the ice where bounces can go your way.

I think the Sharks can do a better job of generating second chance opportunities by staying strong on their stick. I also think that is something that evens out throughout the course of a season where bounces will begin to go your way. Shot quality arguments don’t concern me in the long run.

I think Jumbo can improve on driving the puck to the net harder on the rush. He pulls up often at the blueline upon entering the zone, which does have a tendency to allow the defenseman to play back on him more and break up the pass. It’s part of the reason why he has a tendency to turn the puck over, but also part of the reason why he’s so good at hitting the late man driving down the middle. Overall though, I’d like to see him much more aggressive on the rush to keep opposing teams honest.

I’m not concerned with the recent stretch of play by the Sharks due to injuries and a road heavy schedule. As long as they can keep their heads above water throughout this stretch I’ll take games that lack scoring output but have good underliers.

I still think this team needs to add a few pieces up front to become a powerhouse, but even as a (healthy) roster stands right now, feel that they are one of the best teams in the League and have an excellent chance at winning a Stanley Cup this spring.

Well..

Even as a pretend GM – is that a real offer? Cus it’s a really bad…Niitty, Heemskerk Anderson and a 3rd hold almost no value.

Start off with this maybe

Nhl Dman – Probably Murray, they need someone to fit in for pronger. Besides Demers or Braun this is the best we could do.
D Prospect – Not sure who though, Doherty, Petricki, and Abelthuesuer are the ones I think we have to keep.
G Prospect – Anderson/Heemskerk like you said. Unless they would want one of the older guys we have
Picks – 3rd this year and 2nd or 3rd next year
Still probably need a lot more and they would need to take nitty or mithcell to not break our cap.
P.S. Isn’t JVR out with a concussion?

No way would they accept that

Plus, why would Philly need an NHL goalie in the last year of his contract and an AHL developing goalie when they got Bryz locked up for so long?

For depth. Bryzgalov is streaky, and Bob is really their only backup in the system (I believe). They don’t have many options in goal beyond these guys, in the case of an injury.

All true, but that package for JVR makes no sense when looking at the ages and contracts of the goalies we’d be giving up

Question:

Isn’t there a rule that says that NHL games must be at least 24 hours apart? I guess not since we’re playing 2 games less than 24 hours apart, but does anyone know the rule about this?

I don't know the rule but...

Last October we played Det on 10/28 @ 4:30 PM (our time) and then NYI the next night at 4:00 PM (our time). Then there is tonight and once more on 2/16 vs. TB @ 4:30 PM and then on the next night vs. CAR @ 4 PM.

So Tim Thomas said this when he refused to visit the white house.
“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT" (via NHL.com)

Are people really aflame about this? Why?

I’ll keep my opinions, unreasoning rage filled epithets, hate for certain persons/corporations who are screwing up art, love, and nature out of this and say: Tim Thomas has every right to say and do this. He is not a loudmouth anti-government backseat complainer which is what someone commented here:

http://boston.sbnation.com/boston-bruins/2012/1/23/2728662/bruins-tim-thomas-releases-statement-white-house-refusal-political-reasons

He is standing up for his beliefs.

Athletes aren’t supposed to speak. The Beijing Olympics in China had issues of shutting up activism-minded athletes. Nathan Eccleston tweeted something he believed about 9/11 and suffered for it. Athletes are supposed to run the field, sweat, break world records, take their damn medal and shut up.

Athletes aren’t supposed to come out as homosexuals. They’re not supposed to admit to having a gun in their locker. They’re not supposed to admit to steroid use. The facade is important. Oh wait, it isn’t?

This is not nazi germany, or a 1984 oceania. It doesn’t matter if I or you agree or disagree with Thomas’s statement or beliefs or Eccleston’s or any athlete who decides to say anything. Athletes are not to be put on a cross whenever they speak their mind because they are citizens like us and citizens have this little thing called “Freedom of expression” which apparently allows for people to use hate speech/racist speech on college campus dorm doors in UMD, but gets people who say something they feel in their heart about a country they were born attacked by the audience.

Smart man. I see this from two viewpoints though. As an athlete, I feel like there very little reason for anyone to not go meet the President. An athlete is going to the White House not because of politics or personal opinions, but for winning a “world” championship. In that sense, I think Tim Thomas is wrong to skip out on this. As an individual, however… well, Thomas said it best i think. In that regard, I agree with Thomas for declining his invitation.

In all honesty, though, I’m a bit disappointed when athletes decline going to the White House. However, Thomas has a legitimate reason to not attend. So good for him.

And no, it’s not fair that athletes (or celebrities in general) often have their opinions criticized. Just because they’re famous doesn’t mean that they’re correct.. but they’re humans who have opinions. Like #DanEllisProblems…

Liverpool opened an "investigation" on Nathan Eccleston.

For a tweet. For some words he said publicly. Not threatening words. Just words that were voicing an opinion.
Rashard Maddenhall of the NFL seems to have done the same thing and lost a sponsorship deal. These athletes were talking about things that are bleedingly close to many of their fans hearts.

Tim Thomas seems a bit tame in comparison. I just don’t get why people make a deal out of it when #occupywhatever is such a major thing. A lot of people seem to have the feelings and opinions he has.

What I'm more baffled about is

why did Tomas Kaberle get to stand right behind the President? Barely a Bruin (then became a Cane-Hab) and didn’t do much anyway… he shoulda been standing way in the back inconspicuously and such imo.

I don't care what his political beliefs are, I just have a problem with him skipping it.

This is a day about him and his teammates getting recognition for their accomplishments as a team the previous season, not a political rally where Obama’s going to try to tell him he’s wrong. Instead of going and making the day about the team, he selfishly made a non-story a pretty big story by not going and shifted the attention away from his teammates.
