What would you give for Jeff Carter
Interesting and provocative article on Puck Daddy this morning:
Has to make a Sharks fan think. A big, talented center. An organization in San Jose that seems to always be stable, and in the past has been willing to take a risk on players in unhappy situations (see: Dany Heatley). A contender, something that Carter would no doubt rather be associated with.
But an expensive one. Would take giving up something, even with this years relatively good cap space situation, that's not a contract you can swallow without some serious thought.
So the question is... Should San Jose be thinking about this? What would you give up? Would you risk another Heatley'eque disappointment?

This.
The length of his contract is the biggest thing that has me saying hell no.

Aye...
DW doesn’t do those crippling long term contracts for a reason. Not good business.
Besides, we’d have to give up someone like Marleau for him, and that seems like a sideways move at best to me.

I think I'd do it.
Mitchell (to fill the gap he’d leave behind in Columbus), Niitymaki (really a throw-in since he has little value, but CBJ REALLY needs a keeper, so his value there is biggest), and then either a high pick or a young D (leaning towards Demers).
Yes, the length contract is scary… BUT…. there could be an amnesty/renegotiation possibility with the new CBA.
He may not want to play for Columbus and his contract is bad but there is NO way Columbus moves him for pieces like that.
And there won’t be anything in the new CBA that will allow teams to re-negotiate contracts, the NHLPA will never allow that.

Yes Do It!
The Sharks need a tough in your face forward, that has scoring pop from the right side.

No way I bring on a sub-elite player who has to be paid until 2022.

Yep
Not only is his contract beyond horrible he has some attitude issues that I wouldn’t want anywhere near this club.

His contract terms are atrocious
But a whole lot of people say he hasn’t reached his potential. It’s a dicey situation, but I don’t think the Sharks are in a position to take his contract, even with the cap space. I’d like him, but he got bamboozled out of a lot of good teams by being “forced” into that contract.

I should add
“Forced” into a contract that was with a team and city that he didn’t want anything to do with (whereas with Philly, he was happy to take that contract).

Carter to San Jose is no good for anybody.
San Jose gets a guy who’s been perpetually injured since ‘67.
Columbus gets, at best, if DW was insane, a top-six winger.
Carter gets moved to a city where the fans hate everybody that doesn’t score 8 goals a night.

If there was some way in the new CBA that allowed a player and management to agree to term shortening contract renegotiations (meaning keep the same cap hit, and thus restructure the yearly payments), then I personally wouldn’t mind getting him.
He’s an excellent player, and his attitude problems mainly stem from essentially being traded against his will from the team that was at the Stanley Cup a couple years ago to literally the bottom feeders of the league, and then be expected to turn that team around. I honestly feel really bad for Rick Nash being stuck on a team that can’t give him any help for basically his entire career (kinda like Iginla too).
The problem is without a set in stone guarentee of a renegotiation possibility, the only pieces i’d care to give would be like a Havlat, Mitchell, Nitty deal, and with Mitchell and Nitty both UFAs that probably wouldnt be terribly attractive even for a desperation deal.
And then WITH a guarentee fo renegotiation possibility, the Sharks don’t have the available futures that other clubs could offer.

To give a less glib answer
Contract is terrible. I still maintain, Heatley was a calculated risk as he had a window in which his contract could be offloaded. That window has effectively closed for Carter, as that’s what facilitated his trade to Columbus to begin with.
I’m by and large a supporter of Marty Havlat, but it has to be said, his contract is a bit of a stinker too. The organization has already given cornerstone contracts to Thornton, Marleau, Boyle, Burns, Pavelski and Couture, and I fully expect Vlasic to receive one in the near future. The organization simply can not afford another one. Acquiring Carter means, in one form or another, we’d have to give up one of these players. No Thank You.

The Heatley risk was also more just one of attitude, since he was coming off of 2 years with 41 and 39 goals scored respectively and that kind of cap for a multiple consecutive 40 goal scorer isn’t really bad at all.
I still wish we had Heatley on the team (from a player perspective, not a cap perspective), it is just a shame that his numbers dipped to not justify his contract, combined with his playoff disappearances, thus raising the flags to look for that window opportunity to move him on.

Jesus Christ, I can understand the risk that we're talking about in Carter, hence the cautious proposals
But there is NO way Columbus deals him for Mitchell, Niittymaki, and Demers. That’s a proposal which will fetch you 2 second rounders, or a VERY low first at best in a very weak draft class (I think this year’s is quite strong though…)
Essentially, that’s a return someone would get for a player like Mikhail Grabovski. Not Jeff Carter. He’s loaded with talent and is a 40 goal scorer. No way Columbus deals him for that. What they’d want is something like this:
TO SJ:
Jeff Carter
TO CLB:
Clowe
Petrecki

And there is no way in hell anyone here would do that.
I wouldn’t take him for free because he is signed for a large amount until he is 38 in 2022.
yeah...
but maybe he can turn it around? :)

That’s sort of my point though. i think he goes relatively cheap for his talent based on his contract and the fact that he’s clearly not happy there.
A lot of people are talking about an amnesty to force a renegotiation of long contracts with the next CBA… My guess is that it would be a “one or two bullets in the gun” sort of thing, and the Sharks don’t have anyone in that state.
I’d take him for free contract or not, but there is no way i’d give quality future assets for him without a chance of contract term renegotiation, and even then i’d only be willing to give Havlat and a middle/low D prospect like Moore/Irwin. Damaged goods for damaged goods.
