FTF Podcast: The Podcast Strikes Back

It's been far too long since we've ignored our family and friends to record our award-winning nationally syndicated podcast (statements not verified by the FCC), but yesterday afternoon we went where we haven't gone in nearly eight months-- to the man cave at Matt's house, armed with microphones and Macbooks in our neverending quest to bring you the best podcast on the planet a fairly mediocre podcast about the San Jose Sharks.

Feels good to be back ladies and gentlemen.

In the first edition of the 2011-2012 Fear The Fin podcast we cover a slew of topics on hand. The NHLPA's decision to reject realignment and rumblings of a potential Sharks-Red Wings Winter Classic start the show before we transition into an interview with a man who swept the Bay Area with his passion last week-- the man, the myth, the legend, the one and only Zack Phelps (aka Orange Shirt Guy, aka Sharks Fan of The Year).

Following our interview with Mr. Phelps we take a look at the Sharks current run of 8-1-1 in their last ten games, and pick apart the roster just before the halfway point of the season to list our over and underachievers. Always privy to our corporate sponsors, we air a commercial from "Sharks Fan Consulting Group" who recently filed for an IPO (Insane Proposal Offering) and then tackle the upcoming week of Sharks hockey as San Jose hits the road for a four game swing through the Midwest.

There ain't no party like your nana's tea party, and your nana parties with us. So kick back, relax, and put on your headphones to join us for the ride.

what prospects do the sharks still have?

do the bay area teams (raiders, giants, and sharks) think that players last forever? but who knows, maybe Doug Wilson is planning some sort of oceans 11 type heist to get them back.

Ranking prospects off the top of my head (no goalies)...

Freddie Hamilton
Nick Petrecki
Matt Nieto
Taylor Doherty
Michael Sgarbossa

Those are really the only guys I can see having any kind of significant impact on the NHL. Very, very weak talent pool.

You should add

Konrad Abeltshauser to that list – in my opinion (from watching all of them play & talking to some scouts) he has the highest upside of any d-man in the Sharks pipeline.

by milanahalek on Jan 9, 2012 7:46 AM PST up reply actions

Fingers crossed on him. Haven’t been too impressed when I’ve seen him, but I don’t disagree that he has some upside.

I just don’t think he’ll be better than either Petrecki or Doherty.

Yep

He’s also bypassed his point totals from last season in 28 less games (30 games, 29 points) and is a rediculous +52 (-36 last year, +16 this year) better than last season. He’s the Moosehead’s #1 d-man playing in all situations and has been nothing short fantastic this season!

He’s good with Zeus and McGinn. We just need another guy like Ruutu, Glencross, etc. to stick with Clowe/Couture or Pavelski/Thornton.

Thoughts and observations

Disagree on Couture overachieving. Yes, there’s no sophomore slump. But, if you’re going to rank Clowe as an underachiever, I think some of that has to do with Clowe being a notoriously slow starter, and the fact that Couture hasn’t lit the world on fire. No question he’s been good, but the scoring chances show he’s not necessarily winning his matchups the way he did last season. Obviously tougher competition and brand recognition have a ton to do with that, but I think the up and down nature of the second line is a big factor there. Definitely agree Clowe has let things get under his skin a bit more than he should.

Were it not for Vlasic’s renaissance as a puck mover, Antti Niemi is still the team’s MVP.

Also, I know it’s unfair, but I’d categorize Joe Thornton as an underachiever. He’s still working hard, but the giveaways are stifling the offense. Joe takes a lot of pride in his game, and I think, outside of the numbers, which are still obviously very good, there’s still another gear in Joe this season.

I’ll put Patty as another guy who’s an overachiever, just because he’s managed to look good despite bouncing lines a bit, and his two way game and overall skating are leaps and bounds above what they were last season. I feel like a lot of the overall sustained pressure we create on offense is due to his work. In some less than ideal circumstances, Patty is having a good overall year, and it brings a lot of stability to the lineup.

Gonna comment on this thang.
  • Twas my first FTF podcast. :D And it was damn entertaining. Would listen again.
  • Plank and M.T. are real people, and NOT blog robots? O: Go figure.
  • St. Louis x Detroit Winter Classic is likely to happen, because everyone in San Jose is a fully righteous surfer dood, right bro?
  • Pat Falloon!
  • When discussing product placements with Guy in Orange, I wanted to point out that Bad Boys Bail Bonds should be contacting him shortly.
  • Really important question I wanted to ask: How do you guys like… Observe games? You had a lot of insightful comments about how certain players are playing, but I don’t catch any of this when I watch. Can you give me some advice on being more observant?
  • “Fire the coach! Go back to Detroit!”, “Ana- Miller Accounting” – LOVED THIS BIT. Sharks Fan Consulting Group FTW.

I’d say alot of being more observant just comes with watching every game. You get a feel for what some players do well/poorly and can identify when they are playing better/worse because of it.

For instance, McGinn is a guy who, when he’s playing well
*uses the body to free up the puck along the boards
*skates with the puck
*takes shots

If I see McGinn doing these things, I’m more alerted to him and therefore notice him more.

The biggest thing though, I’d have to say, is trying to watch guys who don’t have the puck. It’s hard to train yourself to do that, but it’s a big step in being able to analyze games and players.

Winter Classic Alumni Roster Thoughts

I’d desperately love Igor Larionov to play for us, but he probably has to play for Detroit. Bummer.

Friesen-Larionov (if he plays for Detroit, Damphousse)-Nolan

Errey-Baker-Odgers

Wilson-Ozolinsh

Marchmant-Zetler

Irbe
Vernon (I’d say Hayward for the mask, but, no…)

People would probably have differing opinions on JR

Particularly after gutless-gate, but I think more of him on TV with the Sharks, especially if Doug Wilson is playing, would be great. Especially against the Wings, for whom I’m sure JR has no love lost. Also, if Chelios is on the other side, that could be fun!

That's a chart of winning %

not of point %
The Sharks have 50 points in 38 games = 1.316 PPG
But, yeah, they work out to generally the same ranking on both charts (as well as the Potential Points Standings charts).

% of points earned out of the total possible they could have.

It's the same as the winning %

if counting each SOTL as 1/2 of a win.
