Friday Chum Bucket: NHL reportedly makes new CBA offer

Bruce Bennett
  • Don't get excited yet but according to Pierre LeBrun, the NHL made another offer to the players' association sometime yesterday. The proposal includes contract term limits being upped to 6 years for free agents (and Bill Daly subsequently dying on a hill, presumably), one compliance buyout per team prior to next season that would not count against the salary cap but would count against HRR and the pot of Make Whole money staying at $300 million despite that being, ahem, off the table. This could just be to give the appearance of good-faith bargaining in court given the PA's upcoming deadline to disclaim interest and begin filing lawsuits or an attempt to pin a canceled season on Donald Fehr. It doesn't seem like much of a concession to me but we'll have to wait and see how the players respond. [ESPN]
  • Team USA dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia at the World Juniors despite a late power play. [USA Hockey]
  • Tomas Hertl had an assist and was +2 in the Czech Republic's 3-1 win over Team Finland. [IIHF]
  • How the NHL emerged from the 2004-05 lockout virtually unscathed (and why that's unlikely to happen again if they lose another season). [The Globe & Mail]
  • On the other hand, why have so many fans refrained from canceling their season ticket packages? [Puck Daddy]
  • So the Spengler Cup, featuring Joe Thornton and Jason Demers, is kind of cool. [Backhand Shelf]
