Second City HockeyHockee Night |
I'm not sure what surprises me the most about the Blackhawks this season-- the fact that they come into tonight having lost six games in a row in pretty convincing fashion, or the fact that they've managed to remain in the thick of the Western Conference home ice race despite getting some absolutely horrendous goaltending nearly all season long.
The Blackhawks enter tonight giving up 29.5 shots against per game, good enough for 11th in the entire NHL. And while the excellent writing staff over at Second City Hockey will explain to you in detail as to why those numbers don't necessarily reflect the effort Chicago's blueline as a whole has given throughout this season, it still paints a picture of a team who has done an acceptable job of keeping the puck out of the defensive zone.
Their Fenwick percentage when the game is tied tells an even better story frankly, one that fits the narrative of what Sharks fans generally believe-- Chicago is currently 4th in the NHL behind only Detroit, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh at even strength. This, among other things, speaks to just how elite this team is at controlling the flow of play on a nightly basis.
But again, the goaltending.
Oh that fickle goaltending, which makes The Windy City seem more like a snide remark about five hole flatulence than a comment about the gusty air blown from the mouth of Mother Earth.
To illustrate just what kind of effect Chicago's goaltending has had on their placement in the standings this year let's set the stage with some basic numbers. According to a conversation I had over email with Gabriel Desjardins of Arctic Ice Hockey last night (who gave stats savant Tom Awad mighty credit for doing the legwork), six goals are equal to about two points in the standings. This varies every year of course-- Gabe's calculations for goals per win last season resulted in the numbers coming out to 4.83 goals per win.
Now comes the easy part where I take advantage of everyone else's hard work. According to the delicious Quant Hockey (seriously, what phenomenal UI) the NHL league average SV% for goaltenders was .913 last season and .914 this season. With Chicago's goaltending duo of Cory Crawford and Ray Emery falling well below that mark with a combined .900 SV%, we have the context to determine just how much that has hurt them this season.
If we say the League average for goaltending is a .913 SV%, compare Chicago's .900 SV% to that, and take the number of shots the team has given up this season (1,589), we can see how many goals against they would have received with an average duo between the pipes. Plug in the numbers Gabe has provided for the number of goals that equal a win and-- viola-- we can quantify just how much the Blackhawks play in net has hurt them in the standings.
As it turns out, it's hurt them a helluva lot:
There was probably a much better way to display that chart but I'm going to call on Lynyrd Skynyrd here to bail me out. Ain't foolin' round cause I done had my fun, ain't gonna see no more ill formatted charts with some damage done,
Give me back my bulletssssss:
- With league average goaltending the Blackhawks would have given up 20 less goals this season
- That is good for somewhere in the vicinity of 3.5 to 4 wins going by historical numbers
- 3.5 to 4 wins is roughly 7 to 8 points in the standings
- 7 to 8 points in the standings is the difference between competing for the Presidents' Trophy or starting your postseason on the road against one of either Detroit, Vancouver, or San Jose
So yeah. That's a pretty crucial difference between having your best shot possible at winning the Cup versus having to start way behind the eight ball in the first round in a Conference that's looking like a death gauntlet come April.
The moral of the story? Chicago isn't nearly as bad as they have been as of late, and their goaltending is probably going to get better either based off sheer regression to the mean or via an upgrade via trade come the deadline. They're still an excellent team, an elite one in my book, and although they haven't made things easy for themselves this year, any opponent who plays them in the postseason is going to have their hands full trying to come out of that series alive.
Speaking of coming out of things alive, does catching Chicago in the midst of a six game losing streak make anyone else feel uneasy as hell?
Prediction: Sharks win 3-2 in the shootout. Goals by McGinn, Pavelski, and Boyle. Spark Notes Scouting Report for tonight's game read as follows-- transition game, team speed, historical ability to pin San Jose on their heels, six game losing streak making my butt cheeks quiver, Hawks are still sicker than SARS.

Do we know if Boyle’s going to be back tonight? Or Wingels, for that matter.

No word on either as of right now, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say Boyle plays while Wingels does not.

According to David Pollak
no Boyle at practice yesterday. I have a feeling they rest him tonight so he can be as close to 100% for the road trip as possible. I’d rather him sit out tonight than play and risk his health going into Hell for the next two weeks.

Keep in mind
The Sharkies are coming in on a little losing streak of their own. I’m feeling bullish tonight on our chances more than I usually do against the Hawks. We saw that the Sharks absolutely feasted on middling goaltending the first two games out of the break. Couple that with what has to be shaky team confidence, and the fact that we played like crap last time against Chicago but lost a one goal game, and I think it’s an award winning recipe for 2 points the whole family will love.
by Chicago Shark on Feb 10, 2012 6:21 AM PST via mobile reply actions
also keep in my both games in Chicago were back ends of back to backs at the end of road trips. the first we were all over them for two periods then ran out of gas, last one had tired legs and played good defense while basically never having the puck, but still nearly sent it to OT. That being said, the lack of energy and the mental lapses the past two cames do give me a bit of pause.

Two unhappy teams
It’s going to be interesting to see which team comes out ready to play…Chicago is going to be a really pissy group – I hope the Sharks are feeling the same.
Even though Chicago’s goaltending is not good, they tend to show up against the Sharks.
Crossing my fingers that Boyle is ready to go, they absolutely need him on the ice. I think Niemi (if he starts) is going to have a good game and this will be another 1 goal game.
Looking forward to going to the game and seeing them live one more time before they take off on the road trip from hell.
Great write up
I’ve been harping on the goal tending all year. It’s nice? to see something quantifiable. Yikes!
Craw’s in net tonight, and these were the lines at yesterday’s practice:
67-19-81 Frolik shoots the puck as soon as it hits his blade from anywhere in the offensive zone. There goes puck possession.
10-16-88 Kruger centering Kane and Sharp. Q’s strategy is making it so easy for Thorton that he lulls him to sleep.
29-36-65 Bicks is struggling, Shaw is probably the least defensive winger on the team due to being out of position going for a big hit
15-17-25 Stalberg has been our best player of late. So Q puts him on the 4th line.
Monty’s out. We have yet to hear if Scott will take his place or the ghost of Lepisto.
In short, if these lines actually see any ice time, I’ll be surprised if the Hawks end the losing streak tonight.
See what I mean about the random line generator...
I believe, all four of these lines have never been assembled before.
I think I’m going to be sick
Stalberg on the 4th line
I assume that, along with the six game losing streak, is the reason why many are calling for a coaching change (however unlikely a change at this point in the year would be)?
Either way, I’ll be damned if the Hawks don’t come out and do some damage in the postseason. Right now they remind me of last years team, one who struggles in terms of standings points but their underlying numbers show just how dangerous they can be.

Yes, I’d like to see them end 7th and face Vancouver in the 1st round, then knock off the Canucks, and move on to play Detroit in the 2nd, lose in 6, setting up a nice WCF of Sharks v Detroit that we can win and go on to the cup finals!

Mr. Plank
Could adjust all of those statistics taking out the Edmonton disasters?
I know nothing about the minutiae of goal tending technique, however from my view in the 300 section, Crawford wanders to far from home this year.
Q has been relying heavily on the Random Line Generator, resulting in a lot of uncertainty.
Duncan keith probably said it best, “It seems like any little mistake is costing us dearly and that’s just the way it goes on a losing streak.”
But if you remove the goalie data from the Edmonton games (under the assumption that they're outliers)
then you have to also remove their waaaaay above average games too. Like those shutouts against… um… well… yeeeaaah, fuck me.
Nice job Plank. But any rational fan knows that the Hawks will probably never win another game this season (and prospects for winning one during the current decade are looking slim too).

Simply because every Sharks game I have attended we have won 5-2.

You said the good guys were going to win. And then predicted a 5-2 Sharks victory.
…ahem…
It scares me how different this team is without Boyle.
Just based on the fact how we have played with him and without speaks volumes to his importance. He is a great offensive defenseman, but also very strong in the d-zone. Which is why TMAC has no second thoughts about sending him out against the toughest competition.
Pavs has been great, but I think Boyle may be our mvp.

Woops, didn't finish.
I think Boyle is our mvp, because we play completely different without him. Boyle is a beast in both zones, and TMAC obviously knows this because he doesn’t even hesitate to send him out against the oppositions top line. Which is the thing he has above other offensive defenseman (except Lidstrom), most others of his kind aren’t good in the d-zone, but he will be out their against the other teams top line, I have no worries about him in the d-zone, hopefully he can impart his knowledge upon Burns, because Burns scares me in the d-zone.
Wait, he has only missed one game, fuck. Well, we suck when he isn’t at a 100%……………..

Burnzie definitely does cover up for mistakes at times with physical skill and wingspan. It will burn us occasionally, but I like his game so far. Very mature.

Agree
Seeing Burns fly down the ice to dive and get a stick on the puck to stop the shot at the last possible second is awesome to see, but its usually a bad pinch that got him there in the first place. I also like how much he has improved since the start of the season. I believe (hope) that he indeed will be a franchise player with his size, athleticism, puck handling, wicked wrister and improving defensive game.

i’m going to have to disagree with you on this one in regards to the last game. Don’t get me wrong, Boyle is a key component to the team and he was missed, but a lot of the mistakes that led to goals in that game were all on the forwards. like the game winner. if you rewind the play a bit…Thornton was coming out of the zone and both pavs and patty when skating hard up the ice to get open for passes. He had the opportunity to hit either or at least bank or flip in with a chance of them getting it behind the d with speed built up…instead he held onto the puck, let pressure come and then dumped it back down behind the net with pressure from the Flames already coming and it turned quick. And Boyle hasn’t been our MVP. If anything Vlasic has been the MVP of the team this season.

Well a key part of my arguement was that we suck when Boyle doesn't play.

We did that during the playoffs. Its useful in deterring the super emotional trolling responses that come after an especially heartbreaking loss. You know the posts that go “I’ve been a Sharks fan for a long time, and finally just got inspired to sign up so I could say…” and then they go on about trading Thornton, and how Boyle is the worst, etc. There’s reasons for using it.

I really hope the Sharks rebound tonight with a strong performance. This team is starting to scare me a little bit. I’m confident we’ll find the playoffs, but after that? Not too sure. This team is super streaky. Was looking at the win and loss streaks this year, and for the most part it goes like this.
Win 3,
lose 2,
Win 2,
Lose 2,
win 4,
lose 3,
etc. Really disturbing imo.

I don’t think anyone is going to know who won either of those trades for a few years.
Seto has been a little bit of a disappointment for the Wild while Heatley’s been pretty good.
Burns has been pretty good for the Sharks and Havlat has been injured.
Right now, the total of the trades seems to be relatively even, maybe a slight edge to the Wild since both Seto & Heatley are actually in the lineup. I think in the end, the Wild will come out on the better (though the trades will still be good for the Sharks) end but it’ll be a while before that happens.

I’d agree if you are talking the Heatley-Havlat trade. That trade was an abomination for the Sharks. I like the other trades, though. Burns is a stud.

It was most definitely a loss for the Sharks, however it was a deal they had to make to not have to destruct the team next year in order to resign Couture and Burns with all the NTCs. If Heatley wasn’t moved, then one of the younger guys like Pavelski, Clowe, or Douglas Murray would have had to have been shipped off for less than their normal value because other GMs would know we had to shed salary and thus have the leverage position.
With his performance not justifying the contract, it was a risk they took to exchange players, and I kinda doubt they could have moved Heatley to another team for someone else. More a situational “we need to move this guy and we’re on good terms after doing a trade good for both of us, interested?” thing.
Of course, the reason we’re all down on Havlat is cause we havn’t seen him barely at all. Once he started getting hot if he started on a tear and scored like 10 goals in the time between then I don’t think anyone would really be talking about it being a loss or an abomination. We just unfortunately havn’t been able to really seen what he’s made of because of injuries.
Havlat - Heatley trade bad for Sharks
only so far…but I’ll wait a few seasons before I truly judge.
Not like Heatley is having a monster season in Min. He’s 46th in the league in Goals, 57th in Points. That’s nowhere near $7.5M worth of production.
On a bad offensive team though.
He has the same amount of points as Pavelski and only a few behind Marleau and Couture; all while having Marek Zidlicky as their best offensive defenseman and Koivu missing a ton of games due to injury.
Bad offensive team...exactly
They have Dany Heatley and they’re STILL a bad offensive team. Heck, I though the whole point of Minn getting Heatley (and his 7.5M contract) was so that he would make them NOT a bad offensive team.
For comparison, here’s a list of a few players who make as much or less (in cap hit) than Heatley:
Henrik Sedin
Daniel Sedin
Anze Kopitar
Mike Richards
Jerome Iginla
Phil Kessel
Ilya Kovalchuk
Corey Perry
Ryan Getzlaf
Patrick Kane
Jonathan Toews
Pavel Datsyuk
Henrik Zetterberg
Jason Spezza
Daniel Alfredsson
Steven Stamkos
They are a bad offensive team due to injuries and depth.
Heatley alone cannot turn a team around, and neither can any of those players above you mentioned. Most of those players listed above have a lot more gifted players around them. The Kings have Anze Kopitar and they are STILL a bad offensive team. I guess by your logic he sucks too right?
Kopitar's cap hit isn 7.5M either
My point isn’t that he sucks…it’s that his production isn’t anywhere NEAR justifying his absurdly high contract.
Neither is Rick Nash's or Eric Staal's.
If they did their job Columbus and Carolina would be the top scoring teams in the league! But they aren’t so they are failures!
I don't know why you're putting words in my mouth
I’m not saying anyone’s a failure, including Dany Heatley. All I’m pointing out is that Dany Heatley is one of the top 10 highest paid forwards in the league, yet doesn’t produce anywhere near that level or have anywhere near that kind of impact on his teams (even when he was with the Sharks).
In a league where cap space is at a premium, you need guys on your roster who perform to the value of their contracts (or exceed them), if you want to have success. Heatley doesn’t fit that bill, so I’m glad the Sharks got rid of him. Not only did he not perform to the level of his contract, but his cap hit restricted the team’s ability to put quality players around him…so it was a double whammy.
That was my entire initial point
both guys have underperformed…yet everyone seems to label this as a bad trade for the Sharks. Incidentally, Havlat’s cap hit doesn’t even affect the Sharks atm, so at least he’s not hurting our cap situation.
Here's an even shorter list, that might be more telling
The only NHL Forwards who make MORE than Dany Heatley:
Alex Ovechkin
Sidney Crosby
Evgeni Malkin
Vincent Lecavelier
Eric Staal
Rick Nash

Teams that win the cup find consistency along the way. They never let their lows get too low. The Sharks have yet to do that. When they streak, they streak hard. Just look at the playoffs the last few years. Late first round into early second round, they get hot, snap off a streak of 6 or so wins out of 7. Then they slump, and lose 6 of 7. Can’t lose 6 of 7 in the playoffs…

I find it hard to agree win this when you look at Detroit’s record. They are the definition of a streaky team, yet they’re always a favorite for the cup. Yes, the Sharks are streaky, but that’s just how hockey teams go. All of them. Besides St. Louis, apparently.

That Chicago is going to come in and just trounce us. Sharks are super back on their heels right now, and Chicago will be hungry and motivated.
That being said, you never know. Either way, the Sharks better start winning some damn games…lest they find themselves in a position to have to work hard to catch the pack come the end of the season.

I’m guessing a lot of fans of Chicago’s recent opponents have had this feeling, only to see their team win.
Chicago’s a weird team—no real shot at predicting which Blackhawks team shows up on a nightly basis lately. I’m personally just afraid of them righting the ship and then settling into position for a first round matchup with the Sharks. They need to either end up 7 or 8 or 4 or 5. Does that make any sense?

I see no reason to expect anything other than a Sharks win tonight. They need it badly and have been less than stellar over the past two games. Regardless of your lack of confidence in Niemi, I think he has a great game tonight and SJ’s D plays much better with Boyle back in the line up. Sharks win 5-2.
Will be there tonite
Bringing my 11-year-old boy to his first Sharks game, he’s a big fan and this is his reward for a good start to middle school. Overpaid for club seats but we’ll have fun. If we get there early is there any place to hang out and hope for autographs? Go Sharks, swallow dem Hawks!!
get down low where the Sharks come out for warmups.
And watch the warmups against the glass, your Son will be star struck, guaranteed he loves it!
Have fun!
Warmup instructions
Autographs are tough, but show up at least 45 minutes early and catch the warmup. Stand near the Sharks bench (tell the usher that you want to watch the warmup, and they will let you into any section). When the clock gets down to about 17 minutes, the horn will go (I think for the 3rd time). At that point, kids can line up where the tunnel comes out to the ice and high-five the players as they come out. After that, go to the glass (at the bottom of any aisle) for a close-up of the warmups. Totally fun for the kids. Some people stand around the bench hoping for the occasional puck to be thrown up (it happens), but I prefer to watch the warmup from the glass near the goal line.

Pucks at least. Burns tossed a puck over to my son Wed night. He came over, tapped on the glass, pointed to my son and then tossed the puck over. Everyone around knew he meant it for him. He was on cloud nine the rest of the night. I think he slept with that puck!!!

Stay After!!!
If you stay after (if you don’t mind the kiddo getting to bed late) and go to the back gate you will get at least 1 autograph. When the guys leave someone will stop. I have had great luck with my 2 boys and getting autographs. The Sharks are really cool about stopping—even after a loss but esp tonight after they win!! :)
We usually average 6-8 autographs. FYI—-Patty has never stopped for us but everyone else has at least once (Pavs almost every time)
And what’s the advice (Murray’s grandfather, Lars [Lasse] Bjorn) gives him?
"Hit more people."
GO SHARKS.
Back corner. If you are facing the South Entrance (street side, next to that park) keep walking past Will Call. Follow the building and turn left and you will come to a metal gate where the cars and buses go in. That’s the player parking. After the game there will be a handful of people there. They will put a barrier usually on one side (depending on how many are there). When the guys drive out you are on the driver’s side so they just roll down their window and you can hand them stuff to sign. Bring a Sharpie though because they won’t have their own in their cars.
Sometimes (Patty) waits for someone to be signing stuff and they will pass on the far side and won’t stop. But someone always stops.

Anyone want to bet that Chicago's usually poor goaltending
finds its groove tonight? We seem to bring out the best in goalies.
So … anyone want to go to a game with me tonight? Seems I can only find them in pairs and my friends can’t go last minute. I would hate to buy two just to waste one.
GO SHARKS!
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

I have no idea what this entire paragraph meant but it made me laugh

I have read your name around 10 times in the last two days, and I finally understood that it is a quote from Snatch. I am happy—i like the name, but sad with myself for being so thick.

nonsense
Niemi is a Shark and I’m glad that he is. I have confidence in him every night that he plays. Sometimes he gives up a few softies, but overall he is SOLID.

Uh Oh
…fact that they come into tonight having lost six games in a row…
An opponent with a schneid.
If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!
"Take a deep breath sometimes, a break, and play some hockey. Hockey is a great way to take a pause from day-to-day hard work." -- Lt Gen. D.H. Huntoon Jr. (paraphrased)
"He doesn't miss many of those!" --Randy Hahn
"Something's gotta give." --Drew Remenda (mumbled under breath on the air)
Speaking of schneids
Scott Gomez broke his against Nabby last night. Once a Sharks goalie, always a Sharks goalie.
I have a spare ticket to tonight's game.
If anyone want to go, please reply and we’ll coordinate. Late notice, I know!
