Late gameday here today so let's get down to brass tax...tacks...what the heck does that expression even mean? Conceptually one understands that it means to get down to the heart of the matter, the bare essentials, but if this is the best explanation the internet can come up with then I don't even know.
The Blues are a good team, a great one really, and one that should pose quite a formidable challenge for San Jose tonight. They're currently first in the NHL when it comes to carrying the play at even strength with the game tied, and as FTF author SnarkSD has pointed out this season with his Fenwick analysis, are on pace to eclipse the 100 point mark and lock down home ice advantage. The fact that they've been able to amass these kinds of totals in the NHL's toughest division this season is the icing on the cake in that regard.
Another bright spot for the Blues is the fact that they have activated center Andy McDonald, who missed 51 games with a concussion. He is available to play tonight for St. Louis, giving them yet another option to turn to for their stingy two-way team. McDonald has really struggled with injuries over the course of his NHL career but when he's healthy he is good for about 50 points per year. This addition, much like the one of Martin Havlat for San Jose, is essentially a trade deadline pickup that will improve the team from top to bottom.
Antti Niemi and Jaroslav Halak in the net tonight-- with a back to back matchup this probably indicates Thomas Greiss will start tomorrow night for San Jose against a Washington Capitals team that just lost 3-2 to New York.
Some other assorted morsels for you to greedily get your grubby hands on before tonight's game:
- David Pollak is reporting that Jason Demers skated today with the team this morning. No word on whether or not he'll be in game action soon but my guess is that he'll be returning at the tail end of the road trip.
- Kevin Kurz from CSN's Sharks Talk breaks down what to watch for and drops this little nugget-- the Blues are 15-0-3 in their last 18 games at home.
- St. Louis Gametime has a wealth of Blues-centric information for your perusal today.

St. Louis is on a rediculous streak at home so this is going to be a tough game. I’m a huge fan of Backes, Oshie & Pietrangelo which has turned me into a bit of a Blues fan…it’s too bad Hitchcock hockey isn’t all that fun to watch, though it’s very effective.
Apparently, the flu seems to be making it’s way around the Blues dressing room, since they also played yesterday it would be good if the Sharks can come out strong and get an early lead.
I also just received my invoice for Playoff tickets, I’m pretty sure it comes earlier and earlier every year…a win today will make looking at that invoice a bit easier!

The Sharks are playing well defensively tonight, despite being down 2-0. Most of the Blues’ chances are perimeter shots, nothing too dangerous. A few blown calls and 5-3’s is the difference right now. Hope the Sharks catch a 2nd wind and push through the 3rd period by scoring at will.

Winchester draws them at a decent pace, about average for the team. Yeah, he hurts us, but I think that’s going to be the trend with more physical players. Vandy, Desi, Cranky are all high up on that list as well, though not as high as Winchester.

We’ve got an improved PK, but I’m not sure it’s really good yet. I don’t feel like we can provoke the other teams and get them off their game (a la Vancouver or the Ducks in years past) and not worry about the consequences.

I don’t know any team that can provoke Vancouver and reliably get away with it… it took Boston 7 games and they are one of the best PK teams in the league.

No, the other way. Vancouver has players that provoke the other team. Lapierre, Burrows, Kesler. They’ll take a slashing penalty, and not worry to much about being scored on because their defense is really good, and their offense is awesome.
When Boston started kicking their ass 5-5, they couldn’t get into their usual rhythm.

Penalties
Burns and Desjardins were both legitimate penalties as was Clowe’s. Bottom line is you can’t take bad penalties and not expect to get burned.
It would also help if the Sharks played with more nasty in their game to draw some powerplays of their own.

To be fair, both of those factors depend heavily on the quality of the ice, which has been mediocre to downright poor all night. Of course the solution to that would be to get down and dirty in the corners. Hopefully the Sharks can do that here in the 3rd.

I have concerns about that article
Sure, the numbers don’t look good against the top 5 teams, but I’d be interested to see how other teams stack up in that metric. I would think that your Fenwick is typically raised by playing weaker teams, so that trend should follow all of the top teams, where it looks fairly pedestrian against top teams, and then picks up against the weaker teams.

I don't like their odds vs. Chicago, Vancouver or St. Louis in a best of 7.
So, best case is what, hoping Chicago drops to 7th/8th, get LA/Nashville in round 1, Detroit in round 2, then crap ourselves vs. whoever in the conference finals. Just disappointing.

Frankly, we’re not going to be dominant against elite teams, and for the most part that’s true of all the other elite teams playing each other as well.
Really good teams beat up on the middle and lower tier teams and are more or less .500 against the best teams.

It's one game.
I know we’ve had some rough patches, but this is a team that needs a trim, not a haircut. The Blues rely heavily on special teams and goaltending. They honestly just got a quicker jump out the gate with those 5 on 3s.
One game. Lesson learned: Don’t take stupid penalties early.

For what has transpired this game… we’re losing a game, because of 2 out of 3 successful 5 on 3’s by the Blues… we just beat the Blackhawks, the Blues are doing absolutely nothing at even strength except clogging the neutral zone.

They didn’t play well, and took a lot of bad penalties that cost them. It ain’t the season ending, but it did look bad.

Show me stats from the other top tier West teams against other top tier west teams
The only stats I’ve seen show us doing well, but it was in January. I don’t know what to make of the Fenwick numbers because there is nothing to compare them to. Yes, against the top 5 teams we don’t do better than average, but considering our normal Fenwick number blows that out of the water, it’s really hard to say what that means.

It’s just that I have Center Ice and watch hockey every night that I see other teams screw up regularly too. It’s not like Vancouver, Boston, Detroit or Chicago play 60 min every game either. They regularly get whole games of sucktitude that we’re use to.

Our Fenwick is decidedly less against top tier teams, but my wager is that would be true across the board for all teams. Usually you inflate your stats against bad teams, so when you filter all of the bad teams out of your percentages, they come down and appear below average.
I’d need to see a fenwick chart of all 8 western playoff teams like the one the Sharks have there to draw any real conclusions about how we stack up.
