It seems like the whole hockey world has been focused on one thing this week. The waiting game has absolutely consumed everyone, Twitter is a-twitter, it's nutty.

Don't worry, though. Sharks-Lightning is finally here.

Kidding aside, this game doesn't really hold too much significance in the grand scheme of things aside from the fact that there are two points on the line. The bad blood between Dan Boyle and his former team has long since diluted and Tampa doesn't have much of a chance of securing a playoff spot, so there's no storyline to be written about them possibly meeting down the road.

Of course, there are always trade rumors, which practically equals instant readership this time of year. While the Sharks haven't been linked to Tampa Bay in weeks past, there are a few guys here that could move before February 27th. So allow me to take the easy way out...

Unlike in Columbus, where the marquee guys are generating all the talk, Tampa Bay isn't going to be selling any of their stars. Steven Stamkos is, arguably, the best player in the NHL and he's not going anywhere. Vincent Lecavalier is far from his days as an elite NHL player, but he's stuck in Tampa because his contract makes him pretty hard to move. Victor Hedman is staying. Martin St. Louis means too much to the franchise. They'll be keeping their big guns in the hope that they'll be able to fix the glaring problem in net over the offseason and make a run next year. Their goaltending has really been the death knell, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that a dependable presence there could put them right back in the playoff hunt.

There are, however, a few guys who they would consider moving. Ryan Malone has been a popular name recently, but something about his contract (3 years, $4.5 MM per) makes me hesitant to believe that he'd be on the move. I'm looking more at guys like Steve Downie, Teddy Purcell and Dominic Moore.

Let's start with Moore. Only nineteen points on the season (4 G, 15 A), but he does play a decent amount shorthanded, which would be attractive to San Jose. His Corsi numbers are actually quite good, coming in among Tampa Bay's best in that metric. He's on an expiring deal, wins a good amount of face-offs (55.7%), and would cost little. Interesting play.

Teddy (or Edward) Purcell has a year left after this one, and he's a bit more expensive than Moore. He does have a bit more scoring pop as well, putting up 33 points (13 G, 20 A) this year. He's still part of Tampa's younger bunch, and may be attractive to keep around. For San Jose, he'd solve their depth scoring issue and could fill in on the top lines in case of injury, but he doesn't PK in the slightest. I'd still like a guy who plays some shorthanded.

If Tampa really wanted to jettison some young talent, Steve Downie could be on the move. Downie would require some decent assets to acquire, and although San Jose's young depth in the goaltending department makes them seem like a fit, it looks like Yzerman wants a more immediate solution that helps them compete next year. Alex Stalock and Tyson Sexsmith don't achieve that goal. Downie has 11 goals this year, up from 10 last year and climbing, but he only played in 57 games last year so he's on about the same pace. He's an RFA after this season which means there is no real need to move him. Downie could help the Sharks get younger, but like Purcell, he doesn't PK. Not a perfect fit.

Problem is, there aren't a whole lot of perfect fits out there right now, and the pool of available players is shrinking by the second. I really liked Frans Nielsen, but he re-signed with New York. Tuomo Ruutu is hurt and not moving, P.A. Parenteau is likely staying as well. Not a whole lot of options.

The three guys I mentioned have one thing going for them: they're better than Mike Knuble. So I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on them during the game tonight. Well, after I check the latest Rick Nash news.

Prediction: Sharks in 4-1. Goals by McGinn, Couture, Burns and Colin White.

Tampa

Much like Columbus, if Tampa had gotten even average goaltending for the first part of the season they’d at least be in much better position than they are right now.

Apparently Kubina is out tonight, been asked to give a list of teams he’ll accept a trade to so their D will be missing one of the few guys who’s been good this year, he should be traded sometime soon.

Even though their goaltending is bad and Roloson should retire, he seems to play well against the Sharks.

This game may not be significant but the Sharks need the 2 points.

I know

you don’t mind Mitchell but are there any available good, playmakers who can play on the 3rd line with what the Sharks need. You know, be able to score, move up to the 2nd and pk? I’d like the Sharks to try and pick who they want now (pay the price if they can and have to) so that there’s no, are we going to roll without a Wellwood type player on the 3rd again next year. An example would be Korpikoski who if he can pk (??) to me would be a perfect fit. Only 1.8 mil for the next few years but either not for trade because of his RFA status and upside or I’m thinking cost to much. Any other players around or under 1.5 mil that fit what the Sharks need on the 3rd that could be kept or signed for next year and not just be a give up something just to be a rental?

Mitchell

I don’t mind Mitchell, but I think they need to upgrade ‘him’. They need a 3rd liner that’s a puck possession player because none of Zus, McGinn or Mitchell are good it.

Korpikoski is a total pipedream, never gonna happen…really, I doubt Phoenix is a seller at all.

The teams that are considered sellers right now are Columbus, Edmonton, NYI, Montreal (soon enough), Tampa. The Islanders are very, very happy with where they’re at in their rebuild and won’t be moving anyone the Sharks would be interested in.

There’s players on all 4 other teams that would benefit the Sharks, but whether or not those players will be made available is a total unknown.

The player you described – playmaker, score, PK…that’s Havlat. Just have to hope he’s totally healthy when he’s supposed to be (about another 3 weeks or so).

by milanahalek on Feb 16, 2012 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks

I’ll just stick to my offseason dream then of getting rid of Havlat for a much cheaper but just as capable, less injury prone player so that dw can sign B.Stuart to a hometown discount contract. And then of course watching Sheppard score 50 goals next to Thorton on the 1st line next year.

4 points in two nights?

Could happen with TB tonight and Carolina tomorrow. While these aren’t playoff teams by any means at this time, it helps us build momentum going into the Joe on Saturday. Oh how I would love the Sharks to end that Red Wings win streak at home!

Sharks win 4-2… they start out slow but goals by Thornton, Boyle, Couture, and Braun.

Sharks kinda need to take all 4 points...

I mean, games against crude teams like Tampa and Carolina should be points every time out. Especially Tampa, with their goaltending woes. Carolina has Cam Ward, who is amazing in every single way…but no defense. Either way, gotta get these points.

And beating Detroit on Sunday would be epic.

Even the worst NHL team will beat the best NHL team about 2 times out of 10, the talent disparity at this level is just not as great as fans think it is. That, and luck can sway a single game in any direction.

Still, this is certainly a game the Sharks should win more often than not. Hopeing to hear the Sharks put in a good effort as I listen over the radio.

Also

That’ll be Jimmy Howard’s first game back from his finger injury…there’s a little part of me that wants Detroit to beat Nashville so the Sharks can stop their streak, but really – I’m happy whenever Detroit loses (even though I secretly like them a lot, they are very fun to watch).

by milanahalek on Feb 16, 2012 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

Detroit can go ahead and beat Nashville. If nothing else, I’m not under the illusion that the Sharks can catch them for one of the top two seeds this year.

I used to like Detroit a lot, but that was spoiled much in the past few years by having to watch their home telecasts on Center Ice/GCL and by reading comments by too many of their loony fans on Kukla’s Korner. But I do still have great respect for the team, regardless (and have family roots from Michigan, old-time Wing fans, so there’s that).

I still think

the Sharks have a chance for 2nd. If that happens (hoping) and things stay pretty much the same I’m hoping for CHI to beat VAN and NSH will most likely beat STL. To me 2nd in the west is the place to be. Possible L.A, NSH, DET/CHI playoff run to the cup is maybe the easiest the Sharks could ask or hope for.

Not a problem this year. Next year maybe.

by Matthew_Taylor on Feb 16, 2012 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

Not worth it.

It’s been said a thousand times already, but the trade talks for Nash are going to start with Pavelski and go from there. Columbus is looking for young, skilled, capable players to replace Nash and rebuild their franchise around. The players that San Jose would have to trade for Nash are ones that are currently excelling in the system- why trade someone like Pavelski or Couture when they’re hitting their stride in the Sharks organization, in exchange for taking a risk on a big name forward and seeing whether or not he fits?

Right now, scoring isn’t our issue. Our weaknesses in turnovers and the PK are. We need a capable second or third line centerman who can lay down the law and play a solid two-way game. One who can settle the puck and set up plays, and handle themselves in the neutral zone.

I’m sick and tired of hearing about the Nash rumors. Bottom line: We’re not getting him. We don’t need him. It’s a bad idea. What we’d be giving up for him (Pavelski/Couture/Picks) just isn’t worth it in the long run. Unless Wilson can somehow finagle a deal to trade Nittymaki, picks, Wallin, Moen, Huskins, or Selanne, it’s not going to happen.

He stinks

I REALLY hope he doesn’t come back next year. He’s boring as to what Ratto is to negative. Love everyone else. Last straw with Mr. Personality was when they asked him how he would feel or felt if having the chance to play next to Thorton during a pregame…. “Uggh, yeah guys thanks”. To me he probably didn’t hear the whole question but at the same time shows how more interested he is to get off camera as fast as he can. And his one and a half paragraph insider scopes that I always seem to come across… Now that’s going way way inside.

Perhaps It's Propaganda

Set up by DW, to make teams think we may be looking to land him up the bids while we fly under the radar and get who we really want?

by Rohans on Feb 16, 2012 11:34 AM PST reply actions

I can almost assure you that DW will pull a trade out of his hat come deadline time but for who and at what expense is all something we’ll have to wait and see.

by 408sharks on Feb 16, 2012 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

Regarding Nash

It’s not propaganda – Nash submitted a list of teams he’s accept a trade to, that’s his right as he has a NMC. It’s believed there are 5 teams on that list and it’s believed the Sharks are one of them.

Whether or not Wilson will make a move for him, who knows. I think I can safely say it won’t happen this season but in the offseason???

by milanahalek on Feb 16, 2012 12:50 PM PST up reply actions

SHARKS!!!!

Not to be a killjoy, but didnt Wilson say during the offseason he wished he wouldve acted sooner when it came to trades. Isnt that why he got Burns, Havlat and signed some vet D so he wouldnt worry about selling the farm tractor at the deadline?
The only trade I see him doing is something with Nitty and a pick for a at best 3rd liner.
The speculation is funny to read however….

Moore

Well we ended up with the guy with the least upside. Four goals in 56 games. What purpose does it do to sign another fourth line guy with zero offense?

If this team is going to go anywhere in the playoffs, they better get some more scoring. This was a useless trade.

by The Sear on Feb 16, 2012 5:55 PM PST reply actions

I think he wasn't acquired for offense...

a) He’s good in his own end
b) He’s a 3rd liner from what I see
c) He’s great on the PK

All things we need for that 3rd line, so that’s why I think there will be one more trade (more like I hope…but you get the point).
