Sharks battle hard, fall short against Detroit
Say what you will about the slumping Sharks right now, but you can't call their commitment level into question.
Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Colin White all took injuries blocking shots, and though the Sharks looked as if they might be putting a comeback together, they couldn't score a crucial third goal on Joey MacDonald, who was fantastic for Detroit.
The critics are likely to come out in full force after the Sharks were unable to really wound another "backup" goalie, but MacDonald truly was amazing in nets for Detroit. San Jose's shot selection was superb, but the Wings' MacDonald moved the pads well down below and kicked away chance after chance that looked like it would find twine.
Henrik Zetterberg, Drew Miller and Darren Helm scored for the Red Wings, but Antti Niemi played a very good game as well, coming up huge on a few shots that could have tilted the game even more in Detroit's favor. It was Niemi's first ever regular season loss in Detroit, but the Sharks inability to score deserves most of the blame for this one, even though MacDonald did his part in stopping many great chances.
So what is there to take from this game for San Jose, now a team who has lost six of their last eight contests? First, in this writer's opinion, it's not time to worry too much. San Jose is still ninth in goals for and eighth in goals against in the NHL, both solid indicators that is is a good team capable of making a deep run in the playoffs.
However, despite those solid overall numbers, the Sharks are slipping in the standings. With just 69 points, they lead the Pacific and sit in third in the conference, but are just two points ahead of the streaking Phoenix Coyotes and four points up on the Los Angeles Kings. Granted, the Sharks do have two games in hand on both of those squads, but the once solid lead in the Pacific is now looking a bit more shaky.
Again, though, I'm not worried. I look at the way that the Sharks competed against the Wings this morning, in the midst of a season-long nine-game road trip, and see a team who is still one of the best in all of hockey. They did this without Martin Havlat, and missing Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Joe Pavelski and Colin White for a decent portion of the third.
Thankfully, it appears as if Pavelski is fine (he played a bit in the third) and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who looked more bloodied than hurt, shouldn't be out too long. Martin Havlat began skating again today, and should be ready by mid-March. Still, though, as we've said the last few days, Doug Wilson must be looking to upgrade his forward group soon.
The Sharks may be losing, but I'm not worried about them yet. The way they played today tells me that they'll be just fine, even if they might need a few tweaks.

Welcome to the NHL, Atlanta Thrashers of Winnipeg.
Wait
Are you trying to tell me that three one-goal losses in a row doesn’t mean we’re as bad as Columbus, Edmonton, the Hurricanes and the Ducks? (I know they’re surging, but Ducks suck.)
Man, I was already considering spending my paycheck on a Sharks jersey with the 2012 first overall draft pick’s name on it.
Or, we could, you know, be sensible.
Sensible?
Blasphemous.
Seriously though, yes, the Sharks have not looked good recently. I’m worried. But I have faith in the team still.

Vlasic seems ok
Pollack is saying he was on the bus with the team for columbus. Shield or helmet may have cut him.
I have to say though
Best (yet most messed up) part of watching the Sharks game while also being on FTF:
Game: Vlasic goes down!
FTF Community: NOOOOOOO
Game: Pavelski takes a puck to the head!
FTF Community: NOOOOOOO
Game: And out goes Colin White!
FTF Community: crickets

The sky has fallen!!
The Sharks lost to a fantastic team on a 22 home game winning streak…
Bench Niemi, trade Thornton, Marleau and Boyle, fire the coaching staff and rebuld! This team is done!!
Now, my actual thoughts…they played a very good 1st & 2nd period and started to lose their legs in the 3rd.
They really, really, really need to start finishing their great chances on a more regular basis but MacDonald was very good.
D coverage is still no bueno, but they all showed a lot of heart in the 3rd…hopefully the Columbus Blue Jackets are just what they need to bust out of the little slump.
Hopefully our D starts to show up soon again.
And yeah, another 6-0 win against the Blue Jackets would be nice. Really nice. Like, REALLY nice. Sigh….

It depends on the game.
They’ll release a schedule once it gets closer to play-offs, and then update the schedule each round.

If I’m not mistaken, the new TV deal with NBC means exclusivity/national telecasts of all games from the start of the playoffs. Word is games will air on NBC Sports Network, CNBC, and NHL Network (which kind of kills the idea of “national” telecasts, since some cable systems don’t even offer it in certain locations, like mine).
Winter. Time to eat fat and watch hockey. -- Margaret Atwood
I thought it was exclusively national after the first round
(last year was exclusive after two rounds)
IE: You’ll get Randy and Drew for round 1, not round 1 and some of 2.
If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.
I believe you are correct. First round is local (with obviously some national games), and then it’s pretty much all national from second round out.

This was game 57
“Good teams find a way to win.”
—a lot of people
Sharks need to find this.
Game 57 this season: loss 2-3 at Det (1-day-off-game)
Game 57 last season: loss 2-3 at FL
at 57 games this season: 31-19-7 / 69 pts, 167 GF – 142 GA
at 57 games last season: 30-21-6 / 66 pts, 158 GF – 151 GA
Next 10 games, games 58-67 last season: 9-1-0
Going: OTW, W, W, W, OTW, SOW, SOW, W, L, OTW
Sharks, in 1-day-off-games this season: 13-11-4, 72 GF – 71 GA
(fix this and the Sharks will run away from the Pacific pack in the rest of the season)
Sharks, in Feb so far: 3-5-1, 30 GF – 32 GA
These, and the rest of the February Sharkstistics, have been updated.
Sharks slip to 5th in the West in the Magic No./Tragic No./Potential Points Standings, but hold on to the Pacific. The PPS are updated after all games are done for the day.
Sharks, find a way to win, fix those 1-day-off-games, fix the recurring problems, and get back to your winning ways!

I thought Niemi was meh.
He wasn’t as terrible as he has been, but he sure didn’t steal the game either. On a couple of goals he looked a bit slow. It’s not clear that we would have done better with Greiss in though.
Like you said, backhand + deflection, 2nd goal was just a total whiff by Burns, got just enough of it to put it onto Miller’s stick…can’t put a whole lot of blame on him on the first two goals.
He also make 5 or 6 very, very good saves on what would’ve been sure goals.
You can tell his confidence isn’t where it needs to be on the 3rd goal – it’s absolutely rediculous that Helm is all alone in the slot to rip off a 1 timer and he put it where he wanted it, but a confident Niemi is a bir further out of his crease and stops that.
That said, this game can’t be put on him – 2 goals a game aren’t usually enough to get a win.

how can you not worry about this team?
So far this team has looked so so on this roadtrip. The Sharks were lucky against Washington, and if not for Pavelski’s lucky tip at center ice that game could have been a toss up. Greiss & Niemi’s play as of late have given no confidence to his team, because they both are not coming up with the big save when the Sharks need it. The standings are very tight, and the Sharks are very close to being the #9 team in the west. I sure hope the Sharks get out of this FUNK soon, because they have many games in a small amount of time. I’m not going to lie, but I am worried about the Sharks not making a strong playoff push.
Go Big or Go Home
Alright, saying Nemo made no big saves is BS. He made plenty of big saves (see Datsyuk’s near poke-in), and the only goal you can really fault him for is the third.

We outshot both of them on a 2-1 margin. Out goaltending isn’t going to suck forever.
Well, that’s not exactly fair, is it? They played better than the Caps, plain and simple. I don’t account it to luck at all. Then they played some poor games.
Both Greiss and Nemo have been struggling as of late, but I wouldn’t say they give the team “no confidence”. The defense has been vomitrocious lately, and Nemo and the Squirrel can only do so much about that.

This team is verging on being a disaster.
And with only 25 games or so left to go, what an inopportune time. But as we get closer to the playoffs things are starting to luck ugly, and is that really a surprise when one first considers this franchise and its choker tag (which, IMO, this franchise has earned)?

You gotta at least
give Patty the credit for showing up against the Canucks. He scored 4 of his seven goals, and 2 of his 6 assists that round. Yeah, Detroit did a good job of neutralizing him, and both of his goals against LA were when we were already down a few, but he did good against Vancouver. Actually getting knocked out of the play-offs last year, you gotta find another culprit.
Thornton
Joe was fantastic throughout the playoffs last year – Marleau struggled in the LA series then got better and better through the Detroit & Vancouver series.
I think the ‘choker’ label is one of the dumber ones out there.
Boston in 09-10 choked – what the Sharks have done the past 2 years is be beaten by better teams…it sucks but I would never say they choked.
this is my favorite argument to the “choker” thing. 09-10 Boston were the ultimate chokers – then they won the cup and everyone stopped talking about it. Most of the time it’s just the fans/commentators trying to attach an emotional narrative to things

However, there are many, many players who never play for clubs with the talent and the opportunity that Patty and Jumbo have had. J and P, on the other hand, have had talented club after talented club handed to them on a silver platter and have consistently come up short. And in coming up short, the two players who were the most disappointing were the team’s two stars, J and P.

In the playoffs since the lockout
Patrick Marleau
4th in goals
13th in points
Joe Thornton
3rd in assists
9th in points
And FYI, in both cases the players who have more goals and assists than Marleau and Thornton also have at least four more games played (excluding Sidney Crosby). Marleau is 11th in goals per game and Thornton is 9th in assists per game.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Oh well.
Sharks lost a close game against a red hot team.
The effort is there, and if they keep battling in similar fashion as they put forth in today’s game, they should be okay in the long run.
The goaltending needs to be more consistent as well in order for them to hang on to the third seed until season’s end.
I understand that these positive, optimistic viewpoints are valid and may very well eventually hold true. However, it is a bit foolish to be not concerned at all. A few more bad results, regardless of effort (with the potentiality of injuries, goalie-ghosts, underachievers, and simple bad luck notwithstanding) and may very well be playing for their playoff lives well before the playoffs arrive.
Possible losses to the Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs this week could very well see San Jose clinging to an eighth and final playoff spot (or worse?). Not to mention what two more losses to another last place team (Jackets) and struggling eastern conference opponent (Leafs) would do to their confidence, which would have a directly pernicious influence over the ‘effort’ exhibited in the future games.
Anyway, we will see what happens soon enough.
No sleep ’til Columbus!

And the Sharks turn the puck over at the worst of times. Our home announcers repeatedly point out why. Its the cutesy shit, drop passes, trying to hit a fancy pass up the middle instead of playing the puck safely out off the boards. And all the personnel switches seem to change nothing in that regard.
I would rather be happy than right any day.

Nabby wasn’t that bad a goalie either. I mean, look at the season he’s having over with NYI. He has some pretty impressive numbers.
But the Sharks have had a tendency of getting sloppy in front of their own net, and like you said have a tendency of turning over the puck at the worst locations. Moreover, while the shot totals are high, there are many shots which are shot directly at defencemen and even more shots which are just shot too low.

He just has an unorthodox style, and it won’t work against certain teams.

Unorthodox = Not technically sound = inconsistant
So, there’ll be times like this and then time like late last year, when the team was playing awful and he carried them.
Moreover, while the shot totals are high, there are many shots which are shot directly at defencemen and even more shots which are just shot too low.
Indeed. Thus the Sharks ability to make a 3rd string goalie look like a HOF’er.

Did you watch the game? Pretty sure I saw MacDonald make saves that were pretty incredible.

Wondering how the Sharks are making him look like an HOFer then.

forget it matt lol
You can’t win, I don’t know what the scoring chances were exactly at the end of the game, but the last time I saw it on nbc it was 16-17 for the Wings, at the time I beleive it was 2-1, so clearly we were just throwing pucks at the net trying to pad the shots on goal.
IF ONLY SOMEONE WOULD TELL THEM!
I can’t believe they made it through their entire hockey careers thinking that the way to score goals was to shoot at the goalie’s chest!

nbc
why do they keep crediting Sharks with so many scoring chances? they obviously just shooting for the chest!
NBC posts scoring chances. Please, link me to someone who will go on record with that statistic. I crave enlightenment.

the neutral?
I believe he usually posts the analysis of these for most games, perhaps he/she will post one for this game later on? And towards your comments of 3rd string goalies, you realize there are only 30 starting positions in the NHL, you make it sound like as if they have to be castoff bums to be a backup goalie. Also for what its worth Mcdonald is something like 6-1 and a 1.6 gaa
Yes, thanks for calling me out. I was wrong. The Sharks of no reputation for making 3rd string goalies look good. I am a fool. Sharks don’t even really play against 3rd string goalies. Well, there was Peters 2 days ago. But we gave him a sound thrashing. Didn’t we?

How about Brayden Holtby and Richard Bachman?
Sure the Sharks do get beat by backups sometimes but the amount that it does is grossly exaggerated.

Sharks record vs. starters- 23-11-2
Sharks record vs. backups- 8-8-5
Given that starters are by definition “better” than backups, this is an absurd stat.
If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.
Well...
Goalies tend to play better when they get a lot of shots early on, and, like all players, they play better when they feel confident. A lot of shots early on can make a goal feel confident, and thus play better. One of the drawbacks of the high volume shooting might be giving confidence to the back-up goalie. Of course, I could just be talking out my butt here. Cross-referencing records from other teams that have high volume shooting might help.
Oh, wait, we’re in a cold spell. Ahem…
SHARKS SUCK! FIRE DOUG MCLELLAND & RELOCATE THE SAN DIEGO SHARKS TO SEATTLE!
You’re actually right on…goalies will tell you they like to feel the puck early and often in a game to get into a groove (comfortable) and with each save they make, whether it’s an easy shot from 40 ft or a good chance in close, they gain confidence.
I think Pekka Rinne is somthing like (this is from memory) 9-0 when facing 35+ shots…he’s not alone with those types of stats either.
This is one of those threads that will be fun to read at the end of the season...

I hope so. In years past I have been a cup half-full kind of guy. But even a strong run right now does not give me any faith that the equation will still manifest in the same playoff failure as years past. And going 6 games into the WCF instead of 5 is not growth at this point. I really don’t see that happening.

I’d like to see the team get rewarded consistently for outshooting and chancing the other team.
Watching the Wings, you really notice how they just generate goals, and keep at it. It’s not effortless, but the end-result of doing the right thing shift after shift. Niemi played well, but he can only do so much against the team-wide system.
The Sharks goals seem a lot harder to come by most of the time.

Seriously, I never respected him more than when he went down in front of Lidstrom’s shot. It really shows just how much he cares about the team.

That was actually kinda funny – good job!!
Murray said it doesn’t hurt, but how unlucky do you have to be to break it in the first place, not sure I’ve heard of this injury more than once or twice in all the many years I’ve watched hockey.
Actually
Murray is half brick and half adamantium. Of course it doesn’t hurt.

I'm worried and not worried at the same time.
A part of me looks at the standings and cries a little seeing LA, PHX creeping up on us. They’re just a few wins and a few Shark losses out of the lead in the PAC. Scary. On the other hand, the Sharks are losing 1 goal games which could have gone either way. I hope that the team finds their mojo against Columbus. Wins would be nice.
Hockey is like a box of choclates. But not really, hockey is way better.
"Who throws an umbrella!?" - Randy Hahn.
Colin White
I cringe every time he takes the ice. His turnovers are killing this team. We need to find a way to keep him off the ice. Does anyone know their record when White plays?
Everyone should be worried. What makes anyone think this team will go deep in the playoffs with this offense and goaltending? They had one all star and no one in the top 15 scoring.
Unless DW makes a big deal at the deadline, this team will not go far in the playoffs, if they make them at all.
in the western conference
us having a poor offense is so far from the truth, we are the 4th highest scoring team in the West, keep in mind without Havlat (for half the season) and Moore just being added this should only get better in the long run. We also are the only team in the West with 3 guys with 20 goals.
Last I saw
The team has scored more than last season, while giving up less. Sounds alright to me. Technically the Sharks have a weaker top-6 than they had last year, primarily due to Clowe’s down year and Havlat’s injury.
Whether or not the following is White’s fault or not, is unknown… but since you asked… with White: 18-15-5. Without White: 13-4-2. I’m not sure how Demers fits into the equation since he had a brutal start to the year.
Whatever is bugging Niemi since he got hurt a couple weeks ago needs to go away. He’s been pretty poor since then.
Please don't eat the unicorn.

Lack of urgency
I have to disagree with the first statement in this article. The level of commitment is the issue right now across the board.
They had it in the third period as evidenced by the blocked shots, but where was it in the first and second period when they fell behind?
It’s the same story on a consistent basis this season. They come out flat, fall behind, and then suddenly find some emotion and try to mount a comeback.
If they could come out with that level of urgency from the first drop of the puck on a nightly basis, this team would be hard to beat.
Instead we get lackluster effort and focus until they finally realize that they are actually going to lose the game when it is already to late.
We have not seen 60 minutes of consistent effort, focus, and passion out of this team yet this season and that is what worries me the most.
