Tough test for the...

Big game tonight with...

Alright, Columbus sucks and everyone knows it. Last in the West, grasping at straws. Looking to trade anyone with a heartbeat. Rick Nash and Jeff Carter on the block, organization in shambles.

The perfect slump-buster.

Granted, the Sharks aren't the best of the best right now, but they're still sitting in third in the West... precarious as that spot might be. The Phoenix Coyotes are hot on their tails, just two points behind after going 8-1-1 in their last ten. However, the Sharks do still hold two games in hand on Phoenix (and Los Angeles, who can't score a goal to save their lives), and the current streaks that both San Jose and Phoenix are on are unlikely to continue for much longer.

While I do admit that Phoenix is a better team than I originally gave them credit for (they looked on the fast track to a league-last finish after they lost 6-3 against the Sharks in San Jose's home opener), assuming that they'll continue to earn points in 90% of their games is ridiculous. And even if you're the most pessimistic of Sharks fans, assuming that the Sharks will continue to drop games after playing like an very good team much of the season is unrealistic as well.

Probabilities aside, though, the Sharks need to actually start grabbing points for my optimism make me sound less like a Pollyanna. A Tuesday afternoon match against Columbus gives San Jose a fantastic opportunity to do that.

Columbus is a really bad team, but that doesn't mean that they don't play well from time to time - they pushed the Rangers to overtime two nights ago, and they beat the St. Louis team which gave the Sharks so much trouble at the onset of this road trip. Despite these occasional outbursts of okayness, the Sharks haven't had any issue dispatching the Jackets. Three games in January, three wins, one by a 6-0 score.

But the Sharks have had issues with other teams on this road-trip, and it didn't matter if they were great, decent or bad. So, there is reason for concern, and the Sharks mounting injuries don't quell that concern too much. Outside of players recovering, I agree that there is definitely some room for improvement, and every game leading up to the trade deadline carries that little bit of of a question if there is something that Doug Wilson can do to make this team a world-beating squad.

There are changes that could, and probably will, be made. But the success and failures of this team will rest with the current crop of players. There is no magic bullet that will make this team win every single game. Trading Thornton or Marleau won't do that. Starting Greiss over Niemi won't do that.

This team just has to bear down and win. Starts tonight.

It is my pinion that the SHARKS should GO. Feather or not this is a guaranteed win, we have a talon-ted team on our hands, and I prefer that than an amazing team far up in the sky. To raptor it up, this team gets top billing for a reason, and we should be proud of our teal and white plumage regardless of recent downdrafts in the points department. However, I’m not surprised if Doug Wilson has a few bird calls to make.

Big Game

It may be Columbus but this is a pretty big game for the Sharks considering how few points they’ve picked up over their last 10 games.

The Sharks really need to get back to sound defensive hockey, which may be kinda difficult if Vlasic isn’t able to play. They really need to earn 2 points tonight and get their road trip back on track.

Couldn't agree more
This team just has to bear down and win. Starts tonight.

That’s the truth right there. The core players have been to the WCF twice now, and it is up to those guys to carry the team into the playoffs. It comes down to them, their experience, their will to win and execution to get it done. We added core pieces (Burns) and complementary pieces (White, Winchester), but it’s up to the guys that have been there before to step up and want it more than ever, and to simply get it done.

Even when healthy. But you can’t really fault a who’s only played like 3.5 games this season for holding his team back.

Have to get back that scoring touch...

We had a string of games a few weeks back where we were dominating teams, Columbus one of them at beating them 6-0. We need that scoring back. The “first to 3” is as true as ever lately. This is the perfect game to turn around the road trip.

Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Clowe (aka Sunday’s Invisible Man), Braun, and Pavelski’s head. GO SHARKS!

Nash trade rumors

I’m definitely worrisome of his contract, but at 300K more than Heatley’s contract Nash would be an undeniable upgrade for the cost. Nash’s length of the contract is worrisome too, but you take that chance. It’s killer that we are paying 5 mil for a player on the IR who we are still not even sure is going to be a dynamic player for this team. It seems like a lot of our hope is riding on Havlat coming back and being one of the better players on the team.

In the end though, while I would love Nash in teal, I wouldn’t at the expense of Pavelski. It seems like every year I want the Sharks to get that sought after player, just so that the Kings don’t get their hands on them.

by Ronnibily on Feb 21, 2012 8:37 AM PST reply actions

Agree on Pavs - too valuable and part of our core.

But Nash is only 27 – and his contract has six more seasons after this one. So it runs until he is 33-34. Not terrible, obviously we don’t know the details and if he has Modified NTC. Honestly if you can make the deal without Couture/Pavs (read: Havlat) I say do if:
A) It would be a goddam miracle
B) Nash would fit better than Havlat IMO
C) Fuggit lets go all in for the Cup. – deal with it after the season.

PS. I totally realize that no one thinks we can make Havlat the centerpiece (see point A) so don’t give me shit please.

I guess my real point was that he has not had a lot of chance to prove what he is capable of. Given, being prone to injury is not something I value in a player (when I was living in DC seeing Mike Green miss entire seasons does not make me think he is worth his talent).

In the beginning of the year he looked out of place until finally moving to the wing of Handzus (evidence in support of your “useful” third liner argument). My biggest issue was that both he and Torrey Mitchell can get knocked off the puck too easy and it was painful to watch. However, I did see some improvement on his end prior to the injury, which is why I would like to be hopeful.

by Cloweture on Feb 21, 2012 11:51 AM PST up reply actions

The Sharks will need him to be useful if we’re going to win a Cup…so hopefully he does come back and do just that. However, I’m just the skeptical sort who will believe it when I see it.

Still not worth the money for him to be on the 3rd line. I can probably come up with 5 other players who would work well with Moore and McGinn for much cheaper.

I’m not a Havlat fan and wasn’t a fan of the trade but as I always say, I hope I’m proven wrong once he returns.

Theoretically, shouldn’t Havlat be amazing with Clowe and Couture? You have Clowe against the boards, Couture’s amazing homing beacon for the puck and Havlat’s supposed puck handling and shooting (does he have shooting, I literally knew nothing about him prior to the trade). Doesn’t that seem on paper like an unstoppable line? Again, this is all based on what Havlat could be, not what I saw him to be this year.

by Cloweture on Feb 21, 2012 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

Well, yeah...

I agree. But we aren’t ditching Havlat anytime soon. Might as well try to find some use for him.

Who knows, maybe he’ll mesh with the Joes and then his cap hit isn’t so terrible…

Havlat's game requires chemistry with his linemates

He’s not a pure shooter like Heatley or Seto, who can just let fly no matter who the pass comes from. He’s a puck-handling, set up guy, and a guy like that doesn’t look very good until he builds familiarity and knows where his linemates are going to be. He’s a victim of a VERY small sample size this season.

He’s still easily the best stickhandler on the team and probably the only forward who can create his own shot consistently.

Eh...

We didn’t need Moen. We got Dom Moore (a move I love). We either need a top 6 guy (to replace Heatley), or a top 4 D man (so we can move Murray into a bottom pairing role)…at least, that’s my humble opinion.

I’m not sure we actually see another move this year, though…

Agreed on Moen and Moore

And I completely agree we need a Top 6 O or a Top 4 DMan. We need to be either the best defensive team in hockey and hope we can score 3 goals a game, or we better get that much better on offense and hope we can score 4 or 5.

I’m not trying to be mean here, but how long have you been watching hockey? Being able to roll 4 lines is a good thing in the playoffs. And keeping your top players fresh is something all playoff teams have to deal with, not just the Sharks.

there are teams that are faster and perform better in certain situations.

Patrick Marleau’s speed is one of the reasons he’s a great player, but speed isn’t everything. I think the sharks need cohesiveness more.

If I am not mistaken we still have not won any cups so far right? We were real close last year but I am not sure doug made the right changes in the off season. I love the way clowe plays and in my view he should be captain. Patty is not a complete player you are right. Its that young cohesiveness that we had last year that we need to get back to some how.

Torry I am not sold on and I would let go.

by TWB on Feb 21, 2012 11:45 AM PST reply actions

Patty I would let go for the right trade, but I don’t know if that is going to get you a cup right now with the way net minding is for the sharks.

We have tied up so much money in net minding after doug said, we are not going to spend a lot of money on net minders??? And we let some good guys go because of it.

Fact check: Niemi at $3.8 million and Nitty at $2 million is still less than what we were paying Nabby. Greiss makes $550,000. No goalies at all have been let go to keep these guys, much less good goalies. Nitty is off the books after this year.

Not true.

Nabby’s cap hit was 5.375. Wilson’s line about wanting cheaper goaltending was a load of crap. They decided they couldn’t get to the promised land with him (quite probably true) got a cheap guy on day one of UFA and then threw the rest of their eggs into the basket of the guy that beat Nabby and the Sharks, ignoring the mediocrity he had elsewhere in the playoffs.

If the Sharks win a cup with Niemi, they will have to win one, maybe two series where they have inferior play at goaltender. He isn’t consistent enough to play at a high level for 4 rounds. Hope he has his flat rounds early against “weaker” teams, like LA last year.

With Nabby, the cap hit was $5.375, actual was $6.

With Niemi, the cap hit is $3.8 and actual is $3.2.

Nitty’s cap and actual are $2.

I can’t read DW’s mind, so I have no idea if he was lying, but don’t change history to fit your argument. When he got Niemi, he wasn’t signed to his extension. He had a 1 year contract for $2, which makes both Niemi and Nitty cheaper than Nabby’s last contract the year he said they were going cheaper on goaltending.

The total for goaltending when Nabby was here was close to $6mil. Last season, the Sharks goaltending cost $4mil.

This year, Niitty has been out all but about 2 weeks so the Sharks were paying around $6.3 mil to carry 3 goalies…the Sharks are paying around $4.4 mil for goaltending now and will be next year as well.

Anyway you look at it, goaltending got cheaper.

by milanahalek on Feb 21, 2012 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Niemi's original deal was 2.5 million for one year.

So he saved about 1.5 million. That wasn’t and isn’t enough to bring over a Keith or Seabrook to bail our asses out when our mercurial goaltender goes in the tank for a series.

too bad hes never not hurt, and seriously let it go, nitty was not that good he had a sub 900 save percentage and 2.7+ gaa. We all remember him as the hero from that LA game when he came in and we made that amazing comeback but lets not get carried away with 1 game.

While I agree with you on the injury thing… Niitty did more than save Nemo’s butt for one game. Nemo was pulled for 3 of the 6 games played correct?

For all the grief he got here, I never saw Hamburgers play as poorly in his own zone as Colin White has this year. Given White’s reputation as a good stay-at-home D-man in Jersey, I don’t really understand his play as a Shark.

Wallin stepped up his game in the Playoffs, maybe White will too. Of course I’d rather see Vandermeer get the chance to play on the blueline. I like the way Vandy plays and how he doesn’t turn the puck over every shift.

I wish we were in that position

but you realize we don’t have that kind of margin of error, were only like 2 pts away from losing the division, maybe if we were like Detroit with a 12 point cushion. If we go young guns ablaze and lose a couple more we realistically could miss the postseason.

Honestly...

I’d much rather see (when everyone is healthy):

Burns-Vlasic
Boyle-Murray
Braun-Demers

I think that’s our best defense, overall.

Agreed.

I think Vandy has been real solid…and I like him as our 7th option. Demers definitely has more upside, though…despite his struggles this year.

These are my dream defensive pairings

With the tools we currently have. Someone please enlighten me on why the professionals (TMac and assistants) have not done this or even tried? Is it all based on having a true “shut-down” line of Boyle and Vlasic?

Injuries are making it difficult to keep the same pairings together as well.

Injuries

What injuries? Both Vlassic and Murray’s looked so damn painful. Hopefully we will have our full defensive roster very soon. I would love to see your pairings get some PT during the last stretch of the regular season. I would feel very confident with that lineup come playoffs. (If Demers finds his form of last postseason, especially the Canuck’s series).

I feel like this is one of those games where the collective fanbase says one of two things:

Win: “Well, we beat Columbus, but when will we compete with the big boys?”
Loss: “We lost against COLUMBUS? Well shit, there’s no hope. TRADE EVERYONE.”

Sharks should get Rick Nash

I still dislike the Heatley for Havlat trade, but unless Havlat proves me wrong in the playoffs, I will still dislike the trade.
Anyways, Sharks should get Rick Nash, he’d be happy since apparently he’s a SF Giants fan. Just don’t know what Sharks could give back to CBJ in return without breaking up the core of the team.

I'll say this

We don’t want the Sharks to play hard…I mean we do, but not too hard. We all know what happens to teams that play hard during the regular season. Sharks shouldn’t worry about trying to catch the Casucks or Wings (that shipped has sailed). Just lock up the Pacific and enter as 3rd Seed, and start their run in late March.

Oh come on! Stop beatin' it! Get out there yourself! Stop feedin' off me! Get out of here! I can't breathe! Give me some air!
