Joe Thornton's Quietly Exceptional Season
Is this Joe Thornton's best season as a San Jose Shark?
The mere suggestion is likely viewed as sacrilege in most circles of Sharks fandom. After all, this is the guy who turned the pride of Moose Factory, Ontario into a 56-goal-scoring Rocket Richard winner. The man who became just the third player in league history (after some scrubs named Wayne and Mario) to record 90 assists in consecutive seasons. The player who led the Sharks in scoring by a ridiculous 41 points in 07-08.
And while it's true that Thornton is not going to flirt with a hundred points this season and likely never will again in his career, the fantastic year he's having has little to do with winning scoring titles. It's the culmination of a process that began when Todd McLellan took over the Sharks' bench in 2008; the process of turning Joe Thornton, the somewhat one-dimensional superstar into Joe Thornton, the complete two-way center. Defensive evolution is a narrative that's often spun about players on the wrong side of 30 with declining counting stats but, at least in Thornton's case, it's actually the truth and here are the numbers to prove it, courtesy of behindthenet.ca:
| Season | Corsi Rel QoC | OZS% | Corsi Rel | PDO | 5v5 P/60 |
| 2007-08 | -1.229 | 58.0% | 12.9 | 1024 | 2.84 |
| 2008-09 | 0.425 | 54.0% | 4.7 | 1015 | 2.33 |
| 2009-10 | 0.964 | 49.8% | 2.4 | 1031 | 2.76 |
| 2010-11 | 0.664 | 51.8% | 1.7 | 1007 | 1.73 |
| 2011-12 | 1.614 | 50.5% | 18.9 | 1006 | 2.48 |
The first two columns are contextual stats that illustrate Thornton's usage by the Sharks coaching staff in each season. Corsi Rel QoC is a quality of competition metric that represents the best approximation available of how good the opposing players Thornton was matched up against were at 5v5 while OZS% is the percentage of non-neutral zone 5v5 shifts that Thornton began in the offensive zone. Corsi Rel is the difference between Thornton's Corsi rating and that of the Sharks with Jumbo off the ice. PDO is the Sharks' 5v5 shooting percentage added to their 5v5 save percentage with Thornton on the ice 5v5 and 5v5 P/60 denotes how many points Thornton scored 5v5 per sixty minutes of ice time in that game state.
While we don't have access to the underlying data from Thornton's first two seasons in San Jose, rest assured that they looked very similar to the 2007-08 numbers. Ron Wilson did everything he could during his tenure to ensure Thornton consistently faced the opposition's worst players as often as possible. Only eight forwards who appeared in at least 40 games in 07-08 faced easier competition than Thornton, all of them fourth-line goons like George Parros, Brad May and Aaron Downey. This isn't to criticize Wilson or Thornton; Joe obviously has very little control over how he's deployed and Wilson's strategy of providing his best offensive player with the best opportunity to succeed is an effective one, as Alain Vigneault and the Canucks will attest.
That all changed when Todd McLellan took the helm at the beginning of the 2008-09 season. Coming from an organization in Detroit that has always believed in a power-versus-power brand of line matching (Mike Babcock often talks about how the only place to "hide" players is on the bench), McLellan immediately identified Joe Pavelski as his primary shutdown center but also began weaning Thornton off the protected zonestarts and weak competition he received during Ron Wilson's regime. That plan was accelerated the following year as Pavelski missed 15 games with a foot injury early in the season, forcing McLellan to deploy Thornton against opposing top lines on a full-time basis. The results were impressive and McLellan continued to use Thornton in that role, pairing him with Patrick Marleau last season when Jumbo faced the toughest competition of any Sharks center and into this year where, playing regularly on a line with Pavelski for the first time, Thornton has faced the eleventh-toughest competition of any forward in the NHL. From ninth-easiest to eleventh-hardest; talk about a dramatic shift in usage.
But of course it's the results that matter. This evolution in Thornton's deployment would deserve to be looked at in a far different light if Jumbo was failing miserably in his matchups. But that he most certainly isn't. Thornton's Corsi Rel of 18.9 is third in the league behind only the Sedin twins while his raw Corsi number is also top ten league-wide. Despite his lowest PDO in five years, significantly driven by an on-ice shooting percentage of just 8.09% (exactly league average), Thornton's 5v5 P/60 is top 30 among forwards while his raw even-strength point total ranks 16th in the NHL. Pavelski's role in all of this shouldn't be overlooked as Thornton's most frequent linemate this season (the two have spent 85.7% of their shifts together) is compiling a Selke-worthy campaign in his own right and has driven the bus on many an occasion. With the Joes taking on the league's offensive titans and killing it, an opportunity arises for other lines to exploit opposing teams' lesser lights. To this point, that opportunity has mostly been wasted on guys like Michal Handzus, a sharp contrast to last season when Pavelski, Kyle Wellwood and Torrey Mitchell wreaked havoc in soft minutes, but the Sharks' trio of deadline acquisitions should turn that into a real advantage for San Jose.
Perhaps it's a simplistic analogy but earlier in Thornton's Sharks career he was a lot like Henrik Sedin, a prolific scorer but one who accomplished much of his success in sheltered ice time, thereby forcing his teammates to shoulder the defensive burden. Now he's much more comparable to a different Swedish center named Henrik - the Red Wings' Zetterberg, a two-way force capable of lining up in the defensive zone against the toughs on a nightly basis and dominating them territorially. With all due respect to Mr. Sedin, I'd rather go into battle with the latter on my side.

I agree, Woolly's having a great season.
I’ve definitely noticed his turnover are A LOT less frequent than in previous years, and that’s he’s starting to get back into that cycle game zen I remember from the Ron Wilson days (WHILE staying defensively responsible). He does take stupid penalties sometimes, and he could probably have 10-15 more points this year if he shot the puck (either to score or to create a good rebound), but he’s definitely worth of the top-line centre role.

Fantastic article
People always point to Jumbo’s declining point totals as proof he’s declining, but this just confirms what I’ve long thought: Thornton has become an under-appreciated shut down center. He’s thriving while playing the tough minutes; that he’s facing the 11th hardest QoC while still managing to lead the Sharks in points and rank FOURTH in the NHL in assists is quite impressive. Thornton has really undergone a Yzerman-like transformation.
And gotta give credit to McLellan – for as much flak he’s getting recently, he was able to get Thornton to undergo that drastic transformation.
I just wish all the other NHL fans who have been scoffing at us for bragging about Thornton’s new dominant two-way game could read this. Because he’s awesome. And both he and Pavelski need some serious Selke consideration.

Just win baby!!
If the Sharks were to win the Stanley Cup sometime soon, the perception of Thornton would improve and Selke could be in the cards.
I brought this up in the "Time to go Young" thread.
I really do think this has been Thornton’s best season. It’s unfortunate that while the Sharks are struggling so mightily right now, he is going to shoulder most of the blame even though he has been our best player this season.
Love this stuff
It’s a bold leap to do something like this with one of your top players, and it doesn’t always work, but when it does the reward is both to the team and potentially the length of that player’s career.

I agree
And it’s one of the (many) reasons I think McLellan is such a good coach. There aren’t very many that would ask, or demand, a player like Thornton to change his game.
"... That opportunity has mostly been wasted on guys like Michal Handzus"
I completely agree with this… so why the hell is he still playing while guys like Desi sit and new arrivals like Galiardi get 4 shifts a game?
Yes in his prime Handzus was a better player than either of them, but his play has seriously deteriorated this year.
Handzus's future?
So what does DW do with Handzus going forward? Does he get traded going into next season or bought out? I’m assuming White is one and done, along with Vandermeer, although I believe he deserved a better opportunity to show his stuff. I also hope DW doesn’t see Winnik as a rental, but a long term solution.
buyout
or if he would do a huge favor maybe retire lol, though I don’t know how the cap hit works when a player retires early, I can’t see any team having any remote interest in his 2.5 cap hit and even if they did I believe he has a no movement clause. I really hope Winnik is kept as well regardless of how this season ends.
If he doesn't retire I would definitely buyout.
It would put a 833,333 cap hit for the next two seasons but we may very well need the extra 1.7 mil next season on someone that isn’t complete trash.
Zus
The chances of the Sharks buying him out are very, very low.
Also, both Phoenix & Colorado had big issues with Winnik in contract negotiations which was pretty much the main reason why both teams traded him…it’s not a given the Sharks will sign him
Didn't even consider the possibility of a buyout
since there’s only one more year on his contract. Just hope he turns his game around and ride it out. But him retiring would be awsome, with age he’ll probably be even slower next year.

How much is Winnik worth a year?
I’d think like $2-2.5M. What’s he being paid now?

Winnik
His cap hit is $950k this year, actual salary is $1mil.
He’s a very good defensive forward & PK specialist but he brings almost nothing offensively. I’m not sure what he’s worth per season but I wouldn’t think more than $1.75, maybe $2mil. According to quite a few rumors he’s asking more than that and if Wilson doesn’t want to meet his price chances are he’ll go to FA and see if someone else will.
However, there were also rumors about how difficult Burns’ agent is to deal with (not really rumors, it’s true) but that negotiation seemed to be pretty easy, not surprising I guess when you consider Burns’ contract.
Rent-A-Player question
So when does DW’s rent-a-player strategy get called into question? Why give up so many assets to keep a player for 25 or less games?
I personally don’t think Wilson aquires players as pure rentals. A couple didn’t work so he let them walk (Moen, Guerin) and then there’s Campbell who he tried to sign but he wanted to “play closer to home”. He’s re-signed a couple of them as well.
There’s a very good chance Wilson will try to sign him, I just don’t know if he’ll be able to.
Galiardi is a RFA, so it’s very likely he’s re-signed.
He’s re-signed a couple of them as well.

I think Winnik will want to stay on a team in the playoffs. I don’t think he liked playing in Phoenix, and really, who besides Doan does? Colorado was awful, so I can see wanting out of there.
All this is assuming the team pulls it’s head out of it’s ass and makes the fucking playoffs.

What about Ian White?
I believe we gave up a second-rounder for White and some will say Derek Joslin in a related move and what did DW do? He let White walk to Detroit of all teams. That seems to me to be a very heavy price for someone who played a fraction of the season. Like I said, the Sharks seem to be giving up too many assets for short-term players.
What about Ian White???
Would you rather that Wilson do nothing and hang on to those picks/assets? Joslin had no place on this team and Wilson is very good about giving players a chance to play somewhere if they don’t have a shot at playing with the Sharks.
Gaustad got a 1st out of Nashville this year, Oduya got a 2nd and 3rd from Chicago…if teams feel they need a player to help push them to the next level or to fill an obvious need they pay the price to get them.
Would you rather that Wilson do nothing and hang on to those picks/assets?
I didn’t know it was an either or proposition. I’d rather have DW use his assets not only for a short-turn run, but to target players who will make long-term contributions to the team. He coveted Ian White and then let him walk when he made the Burns trade. The Sharks still could have used Ian White going into this season and signing him would have kept him away from the Red Wings. In addition, with Ian White on board, maybe DW doesn’t sign the other White.
I’d rather have DW use his assets not only for a short-turn run, but to target players who will make long-term contributions to the team
Who’s to say he doesn’t? How do you know the plan wasn’t to re-sign White? Burns being available was a bit of a surprise and he’s the type of defenseman the Sharks desparately needed.
Once Wilson traded for Burns there was no room on the blueline for Ian White. The Sharks currently have 4 right side right handed d-men, White would’ve made 5. One White doesn’t have anything at all to do w/ the other.
Here's what DW said at the time
This is what Wilson said at the time. See 2.18.11 Sharks press release.
"We’ve been looking to identify right shot defensemen that can move pucks and help on the power play," Wilson said. "The Ian White deal is something we’ve been looking at for a while. There aren’t many right shot defensemen out there. He’s 26 years of age. It’s like looking for left handed pitching. Those guys seem to be few and far between."
I and many others can provide a long list of these short-term deals that are coming back to hurt the Sharks. As far as too many right handed d-men, again, who said you can’t deal them, but you’d be in a position of strength when you make the deal.
I read the press release...
Which explains why he went after White…it also explains why he made the move for Burns.
So in your opinion Wilson should’ve signed White to a 2 year (almost) $6mil deal and had him play on the 3rd pairing – I can pretty much guarantee you if that happened people would be bitching about wasting $3mil on a 3rd pairing d-man because that’s what he would be on this team, he would not be getting ice time on the right side over Boyle or Burns. He would’ve displaced Demers on the 3rd pairing and Braun would still be playing in the AHL.
The trade for Burns, Demers’ improvement last season and Braun’s development made White unnecessary…had they not traded for Burns I’d bet White would still be a Shark.
As for your “long list” of short term deals that are now coming back to hurt the Sharks – shit happens. He’s made moves every season to fill needs / holes. If he did nothing, people would complain about that.
Wilson isn’t perfect & he’s made mistakes but I’ll take an agressive GM who’s doing his best to find the right formula to win a Stanley Cup than one that just sits on his hands and does nothing.
Never said "do nothing"
There again, you say the only alternative is to do nothing. I never said anything of the sort. I’m simply saying DW is acting in desperation too much of the time and throwing a lot of good money after bad.
I didn’t say you did…and either he makes moves or he doesn’t, there isn’t really anything in between. Are there a few trades he’s made that I wish never happened, absolutely – but hindsight is sort of good for that kind of thing.
Which moves has he made that are desparate and how exactly do you know that’s what they were?
Desperate times
So let’s look at the moves near the trade deadline.
Dominic Moore plus a seventh-rounder for a second-rounder – made primarily because Handzus has been a disappointment. I’d call that a move of desperation. If Moore goes away at the end of the season, we’ve given a valuable long-term asset for a questionable short-term gain.
TJ Galiardi and Daniel Winnik for Jamie McGinn, Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa made primarily out of desperation for defensive and PK purposes. McGinn and Galiardi are RFAs, so I’d call that a wash (contract-wise). That makes Winnik, an unrestricted free agent, being brought in for Connolly and Sgarbossa, who is impressive in juniors and might have a very bright future in the NHL about the time Thornton and Marleau are hanging up their skates. If the Sharks don’t re-sign Winnik and get a couple of productive years out of him that becomes another swap of long-term assets for so far a questionable short-term gain. Galiardi’s seeing how many minutes a game? Did I see 2:30 in Saturday’s game?
You can only mortgage your future so long before these ex-Sharks come back to bite you big time. McGinn, Sgarbossa and the second-rounder to TB might be in a position just to do that.
If you want to call the moves he made with Moore, Winnik & Galiardi desparate you’re absolutely entitled to your opinion ande I’m sure there’s some who’ll agree with you.
I’m not one of them and we’ll just have to agree to disagree on what “desperation” means.
Good enough
I think we’re both passionate Sharks fan and want what’s best for the team.

Anyone else feel like McGinn is gonna be a beast for them
With their young core and the speed they bring, and that he can probably play in their top six, this trade is not gonna be a good one for the sharks down the road (at least on paper)
GO SHARKS!
Why?
Because he had a two goal game against Minnesota?
Jamie McGinn is what he is, a 15 goal 30 point player, he may hit 20g 40pts if he get the chance to plays in their top 6 consistently…however, when they’re healthy he’s not a top 6 player on that team.
OT...

Stalock has been loaned to the Peoria Rivermen for the remainder of the AHL season where, at worst, he’ll be splitting time with Jake Allen.

Two games in hand and a two point deficit? We're far from helpless.
Don’t let the standings fool you- The Sharks should be focusing on winning the division right now, not letting the “pressure” of the bottom playoff spots get to them. It’s still a two-point race within the division, and while things have been shitty lately, this is still way, WAY doable.

WHATEVER. TRADE HIM!
lol, i think Joe can still reach 100 points.
I think Thornton just needs a real goal scorer on his wing. This is probably cliche, but when’s the last time Joe had a legit top-line-quality goal scorer? Probably the first half of the 2009/10 season when Heatley’s injuries weren’t hampering him as much i guess, and man that HTML line was naaasty back then.
Patty and Pavs are great players who can score goals but really they were initially playmaking centers, who’ve only recently become goal scoring wingers with the help of Jumbo. Hopefully DW can work his magic this summer to get us Rick Nash.
I dunno, it's hard to say Patty isn't a real goal scorer.
Isn’t he third to Stamkos & Ovechkin in the last 3 years? (Or something like that?)

God, he I streaky.
An since this is a Thornton thread, I just thought I’d toss in there that while I love his 2-way play, defensive responsibility, etc., I’d really like to see him take more shots. Not because he needs them to be any better, but more to make him not so readable. One of the disturbing things I noticed during the Blues game was that they didn’t really cover him. They covers everyone else and the passing lanes, which made it readily apparent that they didn’t expect him to SOG. It’s my personal belief that he needs to take that comfort away from the competition. It’s one of those intangibles that I believe will actually help push his passing game to the next level.
IMO & YMMV.

Under appreciated around the league
Sadly I think the rap on Jumbo will always be that unless he wins the Cup he isn’t a Hall of Fame player. I think he leads the league in points since (2000) and he’s now one of the top most complete players in the NHL. Why doesn’t he get more points for being so unselfish? There aren’t many guys who have Joe’s talent who chose to pass first and score as a later option. And because he’s so big and while in Boston had to fight, people still expect him to smash people into the boards and fight more, but I’ve come to realize that’s just not his game.
Joe Thornton is the reason why the Sharks have been a dominant team, making the playoffs year after year. I think we all wish that Joe and the boys could get over the mountain and win it all to shut up all the haters and idiots who fail to appreciate the subtleties of Joe’s game.
Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl
Championships aren’t the be-all end-all of a successful, HOF-worthy career.
Joe's been in my dog-house this year:
I realize stats don’t lie, but he just seems lethargic this year…Like he’s consistently getting over the flu…Any one agree???

He's not in my doghouse
Numbers do not lie, but there have been a lot of drop-pass turnovers that have pissed me off. I think if you look at his takeaway vs giveaway you will be very pleased. I haven’t seen him turn on his last year’s beast mode playoff performance consistently this year, but I fully expect it to come as the season progresses and things move forward.
Key word here is "seems"

The one thing that worries me..
Even though Joe is so good defensively, is if you look on nhl.com he has more giveaways (72) than takeaways (70). Burns and Boyle also have terrible GvA/TkA ratios at 58/15 and 56/18 respectively. Logan has the best ratio (no surprise there) at 25/49. Thoughts?
Off ice officials
I don’t know how much of an emphasis you can put on things like give aways, take aways, hits, etc. The off ice officials keep those stats and the ones at the HP Pavillion are very big on home team give aways (check the difference between the home and road GvA/TkA for the Sharks)…just like the guys in Dallas are huge on home teams hits.
Just an example: I can’t remember which other team was involved, but it was last week, Detroit was outhit something like 34 – 2.
Anyone who passes the puck as much as Thornton does will have a high giveaway total. Look at the people who have the most giveaways in the league, they’re all top line playmaking centres or defenseman who quarterback the powerplay.
True dat
But…. Thornton does make some bonehead passes sometimes. I think it’s just one of those double edged swords. You want super sexy passing plays? Well there’s gonna be some shitty ones in between.
GO SHARKS!
Great article.
As a frequent observer of the Sedins here in Vancouver I am glad you used them as
an example.Thorton is making the same transition that Yzerman and Sakic made .
Its great to see the numbers so clearly!
One point do you think there is a correlation to Thorton’s lower shooting % from the tougher
competition?
For sure
While its great that Thornton can be successful power vs power, I think we could try to match his line against a 3rd or 4th line a little more often.
GO SHARKS!
