Friday Links Roundup: Ferriero inks two-way deal with Pittsburgh

SAN JOSE, CA - JANUARY 31: Patrick Marleau #12 and Benn Ferriero #78 of the San Jose Sharks celebrates after Marleau scored a goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first period of an NHL hockey game at HP Pavilion at San Jose on January 31, 2012 in San Jose, California. • Former Shark Benn Ferriero, who the team opted not to qualify as a restricted free agent this summer, has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Penguins that will pay him $700,000 at the NHL level. Although he could never really solidify his place in the lineup, Ferriero will always be remembered for scoring the overtime winner against the Red Wings in Game 1 of the 2011 Western Semis (with an assist to now-Shark Brad Stuart). He also looks a lot like Keanu Reeves. Fare thee well, Benny. [Pro Hockey Talk]
  • Like most other teams, the Sharks are currently holding their annual prospect development camp at Sharks Ice in San Jose. Unlike most other teams, it isn't open to the public but David Pollak was on the beat with news that first-round pick Tomas Hertl will play one more season in the Czech Republic before plying his trade in North America. Some great stuff here about Bay Area products Sena Acolatse and Ben Paulides as well. [Working the Corners]
  • For what it's worth, the Sharks officially announced the signings of T.J. Galiardi, John McCarthy, Frazer McLaren and Jon Matsumoto yesterday, most of which broke weeks ago. In an accompanying press release, the team reports they've acquired Joe Thornton from the Bruins for Wayne Primeau, Brad Stuart and Marco Sturm. We'll see how that works out. [San Jose Sharks]
  • Cam Janssen said some incredibly stupid things and was deservedly chastised for it. In addition to his reprehensible homophobia, Janssen also stands in stark contrast to the You Can Play project by proving that you can play in the NHL even if you, well, can't play. • Mikael Samuelsson, no stranger to speaking his mind seeing as he did tell the Swedish national team to "go fuck themselves" after being left off the squad during the 2010 Olympics, apparently isn't the biggest fan of Mike Gillis and the Vancouver Canucks' front office. Not entirely sure what this means for the Sharks' chances of signing him. [Pass it to Bulis]
  • Finally, an extremely insightful look at the substantial advantages of retaining puck possession on zone entries over playing dump-and-chase. [NHL Numbers]
