Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g12_h2h

  • Despite being outshot by a sizable amount, the Sharks were generally able to keep the Senators to the perimeter and limited them to just twelve scoring chances over the course of the game, the same total as the Sharks generated.
  • This was probably the weakest game of the season so far by the Sharks' five-man shutdown unit of Patrick Marleau, Logan Couture and Tyler Kennedy up front alongside Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun on the blueline. But given that all of them save Kennedy had played upwards of 20 minutes against Montreal less than 20 hours prior to puck-drop in Ottawa, I think we can give them a pass.
  • Senators coach Paul MacLean, as Red Wings organization expats are wont to do, hard-matched Jason Spezza against the Joe Thornton line for much of the night and Spezza was absolutely crushed. No one will mistake James Sheppard for Brent Burns but it's impressive how much of a difference adding his size and speed to that line with Thornton and Tomas Hertl made. Sheppard opened up space for his linemates in a way Freddie Hamilton understandably can't quite do yet and the result was the Thornton line being far and away the Sharks' best in this game.
