Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g3_h2h

  • We're three games in and the Sharks have outchanced their opponents by a combined total of 59-22, including a 41-16 edge at even-strength. It's early, extremely early, far too early to draw any meaningful conclusions about where this season is headed. But it's safe to say this is a more encouraging unbeaten run to start the season than the Sharks displayed a year ago when they rode a hot power play and not much else to early success.
  • When the Sharks score nine goals and Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Brent Burns combine for just two points, it's a good sign. Scoring depth has been the bane of this team's existence for years so it's a nice change of pace to be able to roll three potent lines capable of outchancing their counterparts, with any one of them capable of stealing the spotlight on any given night.
  • Tomas Hertl was unquestionably the story of the game but how about Matt Nieto? When he was on the ice at even-strength, the Sharks registered 24 shot attempts to just 6 by the Rangers and outchanced them 5-0. And, oh yeah, he scored his first NHL goal and added two assists. The Pavelski line had a bit of an uneven start to the season but they were lights out last night and, despite Hertl's individual dominance, probably the team's best line.
