Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g34_h2h

  • In three first periods against St. Louis this season, the Sharks have outshot the Blues 36-12, outchanced them 24-6 and outscored them 8-0. Surprisingly (or maybe not given that the Blues played the previous night in Ottawa), the 9-0 edge in chances the Sharks built through twenty minutes last night was the most lopsided margin yet even though only two of those chances found the back of the net.
  • This game, particularly the third period, certainly lends some credence to the theory that Marty Havlat is still an effective player when put on a line with Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture. When those three were on the ice together last night, the Sharks outchanced the Blues 6-0 and outscored them one-nil. I'm sure we'll see lineup changes prior to the game in L.A. (presumably Matt Nieto and Tyler Kennedy will draw back in for John McCarthy and Mike Brown, who were useless) but here's hoping that trio stays together.
  • Probably Tom, Dick & Hairy's best game as a line since the last time the Sharks played the Blues. I'm sure Ken Hitchcock would have liked to have matched David Backes up against Jumbo but Backes' concussion forced the Blues head coach to go with Patrik Berglund in that role and Joe crushed him, reminiscent of what happened when those two were matched up against each other in the playoff series between these teams a couple of years ago.
