A day after re-signing restricted free agents Andrew Desjardins and James Sheppard, the Sharks announced that they've come to terms with RFA defenseman Jason Demers on a one-year contract. Financial details, as usual, are not immediately available but Demers' qualifying offer would have totaled $1.4 million, although it's certainly possible this contract came in under that.
After a spectacular 2010-11 campaign, Demers is coming off a couple of disappointing seasons but projects to start the year on the Sharks' third defense pairing. Including Matt Tennyson, the Sharks now have seven defensemen under contract for next season. This signing leaves T.J. Galiardi as the team's only remaining unsigned RFA. But more importantly, the signing gives us one more year to uncover the unsolved mystery of Demers' nickname.
UPDATE: Kevin Kurz reports that Demers' contract is for $1.5 million. That leaves the Sharks with about $3.57 million in cap space with two forwards and a backup goalie left to sign.
