Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g51_h2h

  • Todd McLellan has commented often that the Sharks seem to tighten up defensively when playing in front of Alex Stalock. I'm not sure how much of that is an illusion given the fact that Stalock has mostly started against terrible teams but there's no doubt this was a terrific defensive effort from San Jose. They allowed just four even-strength scoring chances (six overall) the entire game, including none over the final nine minutes. Two of Winnipeg's four even-strength chances missed the net, too.
  • Joe Pavelski could have easily had another two-goal game. Five of the Sharks' thirteen scoring chances (obviously including their lone goal) came off his stick, and he also set up three others lest you think he's become one-dimensional in his scoring prowess.
  • Mike Brown's statline is pretty funny. Zero chances for, zero chances against (as well as zero overall shots for and against) in a little over four minutes of ice time. It's good that he didn't hurt the Sharks, beyond his needless charging penalty on Jacob Trouba, but I really can't understand why he was in the lineup over James Sheppard.
