Head-to-head scoring chances

  • If you can neutralize Chicago's loaded top line, you have a good chance at beating them. And that's exactly what the Sharks did as they outchanced the Blackhawks 5-2 with Jonathan Toews on the ice at even-strength courtesy a great game from the newly-constructed Nieto/Thornton/Burns line and Vlasic, Braun and Boyle on defense who all saw time against Toews, Sharp and Hossa.
  • Holding the Blackhawks to just two scoring chances on 19 shot attempts in the first period was key as the Sharks were much more dangerous offensively over the remainder of the game following their first period lulls. But the defense was there to pick up the slack before everything else got going.
  • Pretty ugly scoring chance differential for Marty Havlat who struggled to find chemistry with any of the combination of linemates he was used alongside in this game. It wasn't until he was paired with Patrick Marleau in the overtime period that he really got going. I think the Sharks have to play him with Marleau in regulation as well to ensure he isn't a liability.
