  • Patrick Marleau, who still leads the NHL in goals and points, was named the league's first star of the first week of the 2013 season, ahead of second and third stars Corey Crawford and Martin St. Louis [San Jose Sharks]
  • Jeremy Roenick reacts to that. [Mercury News]
  • And then reacts some more. [Working the Corners]
  • Stick-tap to reader evilducks for pointing me in the direction of this great LeBrun piece, featuring Mike Babcock's an anonymous Western Conference head coach's excellent take on Marleau: "To me, Patrick Marleau is a player that’s misunderstood and misrepresented. He’s a very, very good 200-foot player. Even when he’s not scoring, he’s one of the best penalty killers in the league. He was a great player in the Olympics. He’s just a quiet guy. Even when he’s not scoring, he still contributes in other areas that he never gets any credit for. He does a lot of other things well that as a coach, you really appreciate. It’s really, really unfair the criticism that he’s taken. If you really watch him carefully as an opposition coach, you appreciate all the little things that he does that gets you out of the ditch all the time. Honestly, he’s a much better player than he’s ever been given credit for." [LeBrun]
  • This is pretty cool: the Sharks activated a cleaner energy source at HP Pavilion to replace about 90% of the eletrical utility power used on non-event days and 25% consumed during game days. [NHL Green]
  • Brad Stuart hit aftermath: Gabriel Landeskog missed last night's game in Edmonton with "head and neck injuries" that hopefully isn't, but probably is, code for "concussion." Not good. [Pro Hockey Talk]
  • Pierre LeBrun had the Sharks 2nd overall in his weekly power rankings. [ESPN]
  • Marleau is your (very) early Hart Trophy favorite. [Puck Daddy]
  • Lambert on the Subban contract: "This is a deal that both sides seem to have lost, somehow. Subban doesn’t get nearly the money or years he should have. Bergevin, meanwhile, puts a Band-Aid on a PR bullet wound, ensuring that whether it’s through arbitration or a normal negotiation, Subban is going to get paid a lot more against the cap than he would have with a reasonable longer-term deal today."
