Hypothetical: California Classic OR Petition: Sharks Outdoor Game

Of all things I try to be an advocate, and an optimistic one at that. However, at the risk of sounding pessimistic I'm going to venture that the Sharks are not going to be given a Winter Classic anytime soon. Or ever. On the brighter side I don't think that the NHL's lack of interest or faith in a California outdoor game, or in the Sharks participating in one elsewhere, means that the Sharks won't or can't have an outdoor game anyway.

The hypothetical is this: Can the Sharks partner with another team, perhaps the Ducks or Kings, and put on an outdoor/classic game of their own?

The petition is this: The Sharks or a Socal team should host a California Classic (Yes/No?)

Defending the Blue Line Needs Your Vote

Defending the Blue Line, a group that your very own Brent Burns is a major supporter of, is up for an award directly from the President of the United States, and we need votes from the people... we need votes from you. The contest was going very smoothly, until this morning. One of our competitors has made a huge push today, and is threatening to take our lead.

We don't want that to happen.

So here I am, asking for your help. The process is very simple. Go to the Joining Forces Community Challenge DTBL page and click "vote." You will need to register, but that process takes less than a minute. Once confirmed, your vote will be counted, and you will be given the chance to share your vote on Facebook or Twitter.

The voting is open to one vote, per day, per person. The voting window resets each day at midnight eastern, so if you are willing to help, be sure to go back each day and vote again.

We would appreciate any support we can get, and would love the support of the Sharks fan base, a group that has shown it's passion for our cause in the past. Would you do us the honor of casting your vote to help us out?

For your reference, you can visit Defending the Blue Line's website HERE, should you need more information.

Sorry for the distraction from hockey talk, but we really could use all the help we can get.

What would you give for Jeff Carter

Interesting and provocative article on Puck Daddy this morning:

Jeff Carter, damaged goods

Has to make a Sharks fan think. A big, talented center. An organization in San Jose that seems to always be stable, and in the past has been willing to take a risk on players in unhappy situations (see: Dany Heatley). A contender, something that Carter would no doubt rather be associated with.

But an expensive one. Would take giving up something, even with this years relatively good cap space situation, that's not a contract you can swallow without some serious thought.

So the question is... Should San Jose be thinking about this? What would you give up? Would you risk another Heatley'eque disappointment?

Should San jose try to trade for Jeff Carter

Hypothetical: If the Coyotes had to move...

I'm sure there's no reason to suspect that the Coyotes are going anywhere. I mean, they have an awesome arena location, a solid fan base, and reliable ownership. They're probably OK. Or not, who knows. Maybe they're in deep trouble, the fans are wondering if they should commit to the Coyotes and the league can't sell the team fast enough. I'm not a doctor or anything, I might not be the right guy to give a diagnosis.

Selling 2 Club Level seats for tomorrow's game vs Columbus and others

Hi Guys,

Thanks for taking the time to check this thread out. I've got 2 season tickets and am looking to get rid of tomorrow's game vs the Columus Blue Jackets game, 1/31/12, for under face.

Seats are in section 102 row 5 which are extremely close to the ice, present an excellent view of the entire rink, and are slightly more towards the end where the Sharks shoot periods 1 and 3, while still being close enough to center ice. You also get the VIP treatment given that these are Club Level seats. HP sells these seats for 140 face value at the box office plus fees, taxes, and the dynamic ticket pricing thing they've implemented this year, which easily puts the seats at over $160 each.

Best offer gets the tickets. I am expecting to get around face value so please send me your offers and I can get these tickets to you right away. I can email these tickets via my sharks ticket account or meet up anytime to do the exchange. I also have other games available so please just send me a text or call me for more info.

Thank you and go Sharks!

NHL Magic Numbers, Tragic Numbers, & Potential Points Standings - 2011-12 Running Charts

Latest update after all games ended on February 09

Is there a "Magic Number" in the NHL? Well, I've been keeping the stats toward the end of the season, in the last several seasons, of where teams sit, what is the best they can do with what points are available to them, how many points will it take to make the playoffs, and to win division/conference/presidents trophy.

These stats change every day, and the teams are not in the same order of the current NHL standings, rather, they are in the order of their Potential Points (maximum points they can get). One might even go so far to say that these are the true standings, equal to standings based on average points per game, or winning percentage, but shown in a way that is easier to comprehend.

These standings will be updated as often as possible. The closer to the end of the season, the more often this chart will be updated. When teams start getting close to obtaining a certain position, then I'll try to keep them updated every day or so.

How it works: At the beginning of the season, every team has the potential of 164 Points, which would be obtained by winning all 82 of the regular season games. When a team loses, whether in regulation, overtime, or shootout, that Potential Points number drops. In these charts, no team can climb up the charts; a win keeps the team at the same potential points. A team can only fall as they lose their potential points. Although these charts might not show the current NHL standings, they are virtually the exact equivalent of the charts that compute Points Per Game, but in a much easier-to-understand format, without having to use decimals to 4 or 5 places, and without having to calculate the very inaccurate projected records for all of the teams. A team can be in the running according to the NHL standings, but still be sitting below the number of potential points needed to obtain a playoff spot at the time of the latest update.

Like it or lump it, these charts indicate the true standings, based on how well the teams are actually doing!

So then, how is your team really doing?
