Last week, the Worcester Sharks ended their 2011-12 season on a winning note at the DCU Center to finish with an overall record of 31-33-4-8 with 74 points. The Sharks finished in 13th place of the AHL Eastern Conference, missing the AHL Playoffs by nine points, and finished in last place of the Atlantic Division.

On Friday night {April 13}, the Sharks hosted the St. John's IceCaps in their final meeting of the season and were defeated 3-1. Ben Guite had the lone goal for the Sharks while Harri Sateri {15-20-0-1, 2.86 goals against average, .908 save percentage} stopped 25-of-27 shots.

After a scoreless first period, IceCaps defenseman Travis Ramsey gave the IceCaps a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season at 6:04 of the second period off a blast from the top of the right point of the Sharks zone that got through traffic {seven skaters} and beat Sateri through the pads for the goal.

Guite tied the game at 11:32 with his fourth goal of the season. Holding the puck at the right point of the IceCaps zone, Sharks defenseman Dylan DeMelo sent the puck to the right corner to Brandon Mashinter, who fed the puck to Guite, who ripped a one-timer on net from the top of the slot that beat IceCaps goalie Edward Pasquale through the pads for the goal. The assist was DeMelo's first of his professional career and his first career professional point.

Woo Rewind - Sharks eliminated from AHL playoff race, suspenions, new faces and Petrecki honored

Worcester Sharks defenseman Sena Acolatse scored three power play goals last week, including two against the Manchester Monarchs on April 10. Photo courtesy of www.sharksahl.com

Despite earning 5-of-8 points in their last four games, the Worcester Sharks were officially eliminated from the AHL Eastern Conference playoff race on Wednesday night {April 11} as the Portland Pirates defeated the Connecticut Whale 2-1.

Even though the Sharks will be heading home early for the second consecutive season, the Sharks will look to finish above .500 for the season in their final three games of the season this weekend. To date, the Sharks are 30-31-4-8 with 72 points.

On April 4, the Sharks wrapped up a four-game home stand at the DCU Center by hosting the visiting Albany Devils in their final meeting of the season and skated away with a 2-1 victory to snap their six game losing streak.. Tony Lucia and John McCarthy scored for the Sharks while Harri Sateri {14-19-0-1, 2.91 goals against average, .907 save percentage} stopped 31-of-32 shots.

After 30 minutes of scoreless hockey, Lucia gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with his eighth goal of the season at 5:55 of the second period. Entering the Devils zone at the top of the left point, Sharks forward James Livingston skated into the left face-off circle and fired a quick snap shot on net that Devils goalie Jeff Frazee stopped with his mask. However, Frazee wasn't able to control the rebound and Lucia, who was crashing the net, was able to get his stick on the puck and slammed the puck into the open net for the goal. Livingston and Sharks forward Curt Gogol were credited with the assists.

One-on-one with Worcester Sharks forward Nathan Moon

In his first year with the Worcester Sharks, forward Nathan Moon has registered 29 points {11-18-29}, is second amongst AHL rookies with 149 penalty minutes and third with 11 fighting majors. Photo courtesy of circlingthewagon.wordpress.com

Special thank you to Eric Lindquist and Nathan Moon for this opportunity. Enjoy and be sure to follow Nathan Moon on Twitter @moon101010.

How is the hair doing since having it cut off a couple weeks ago for Locks of Love?
{Laughs}. It’s growing in quite well. It took a little getting used to but I had my hair shaved for the playoffs last year in juniors so it’s good to have it short.

Along with Curt Gogol, the two of you grew your hair out all season for Locks of Love. How did that come about? Did you guys volunteer or were you selected?
It was a little bit of both. They approached us because we had a shaggy look to our hair already and we decided to grow it out for the season because Locks of Love is a great cause.

For Sharks fans that haven’t had a chance to see you play in person or on the AHL Live feeds, how would you describe yourself as a player?
I would say I’m a little bit of a gritty player with skill. A good two-way player that can win key face-offs while being solid defensively and good around the net.

I read you honed your hockey skills for your hockey future by playing in the Quinte AAA Red Devils System in Ontario and for the Wellington Dukes of the Ontario Provincial Junior "A" Hockey League. What sticks out most to you about your early hockey days?
Going all the way back to Tim Blake, who was my AAA coach, and all my teammates, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here today in Worcester. Getting to play for Wellington was a great experience. The team was close to home and to get called up to play for a great organization in Wellington when I was 14-15 years old was just an unbelievable experience.

Is it true you were quite the running back in the Belleville Minor Football League? What made you pursue hockey over football?
{Laughs} Yeah, I started playing football in sixth grade and played into high school. My buddies said one day, "Let’s go play" and I was like, "Why not?" I fell in love with it and was pretty good at it. I was a quarterback in sixth grade then got moved to running back/half back. The coach asked me to play again in high school and I said, "Ok." However, I gave football up in 10th grade because I knew I had to pick between football and hockey and knew it would be hockey. Its always been a dream of mine to play in the NHL and I wanted to chase that dream.

How did you become interested in hockey?
At a very young age, three or four, my mom and dad put me in skates and put me out on the ice. I joined a recreation hockey league and fell in love with the game. I just loved going out there and playing.

Woo Rewind - Sharks playoff hopes on life support as losing streak reaches six games

Worcester Sharks goalie Tyson Sexsmith suffered a broken finger on his catching hand in the pregame warmups of the Sound Tigers game on March 27 and is out indefinitely. Photo courtesy of John Ferrarone of www.telegram.com

As the result of a disappointing week that saw the Worcester Sharks lose all four of their games and extend their losing streak to six games, the Sharks dropped to 14th place in the AHL Eastern Conference and are nine points behind the Manchester Monarchs for the eighth and final playoff spot. Overall, the Sharks dropped to 28-30-4-7 with 67 points and have only seven games remaining.

The Sharks' week started Tuesday night {March 27} as the team traveled to the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT, to play the hosting Bridgeport Sound Tigers in their final meeting of the season and were defeated 5-4 despite leading 4-1 early in the second period.

Sena Acolatse, Tim Kennedy and John McCarthy scored for the Sharks while Tyson Sexsmith {13-12-2-7, 2.33 goals against average, .916 save percentage} stopped 15-of-19 shots in 40 minutes of play before being pulled for Harri Sateri {12-18-0, 3.05 goals against average, .901 save percentage} at the start of the third period due to injury. Sateri stopped 13-of-14 shots in his 20 minutes of play. In addition, Kennedy {1-1-2}, McCarthy {1-1-2} and Acolatse {2-0-2} all had multi-point games for the Sharks.

Acolatse gave the Sharks an early 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season at 2:40 of the first period. With the puck inside the Sound Tigers zone, Sharks forward Tony Lucia tried to carry the puck behind the net of Sound Tigers goalie Kevin Poulin but the puck squirted loose at the left side of the goalie crease. Acolatse corralled the loose puck, deked out both Sound Tigers defenseman Aaron Ness and Poulin and slid the puck into the open net for the goal. It was the first time in the Sharks' last eight games that they scored the first goal of the game.

Kennedy extended the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal, his 12th goal of the season at 10:42. With Sound Tigers defenseman Matt Donovan serving a double minor for high-sticking and the puck on the left half wall of the Sound Tigers zone, McCarthy chipped the puck ahead for Kennedy, who corralled the puck inside the left face-off circle and fired a quick shot on net that Poulin stopped. Kennedy followed his shot and fired a backhanded shot into the open net from in the slot for the goal.

McCarthy pushed the lead to 3-0 with his team leading 19th goal of the season just 42 seconds into the second period. Entering the Sound Tigers zone through the middle, McCarthy fired a shot on net from the center point that Poulin stop. Sharks forward Brandon Mashinter fired a quick backhander on the rebound the Poulin stopped as well. Mashinter stayed with the puck and centered the puck in front for Kennedy but the puck jumped over Kennedy's stick. McCarthy jumped on the loose puck deep in the slot and fired a backhanded shot into the open net for the goal.

Sound Tigers forward Blair Riley cut the Sharks lead to 3-1 with his fifth goal of the season at 2:38 off a quick shot from on top of the right face-off circle along the wall that beat Sexsmith through the pads.

Acolatse regained the Sharks' three goal lead with his second goal of the game at 4:18. Rushing into the Sound Tigers zone down the right side, Acolatse faked the shot not once, not twice but three times on his forehand in the right face-off circle, cut in front and flipped the puck into the net with a backhanded shot for the goal. Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin was credited with the only assist on the goal.

Woo Rewind - Sharks fall out of playoff race again and Mike Moore gets suspended

Worcester Sharks forward John McCarthy scored goals in both games last week and continues to lead the team in scoring {18-24-42}. Photo courtesy of www.sharksahl.com

Last week, the Worcester Sharks failed to take advantage of their games in hand by losing both of their games and dropped to 13th place in the standings, four points behind the Syracuse Crunch for the eighth and final playoff spot in the AHL Eastern Conference. With 11 games remaining, the Sharks are 28-26-4-7 with 67 points

On Wednesday night {March 21}, the Sharks traveled to the Times Union Center in Albany, NY, to play the hosting Albany Devils in their third meeting of the season and were defeated 6-5.

Matt Irwin, Brian O'Hanley, Tim Kennedy, Jack Combs and John McCarthy scored for the Sharks while Harri Sateri {12-14-0, 2.92 goals against average, .903 save percentage} stopped 40-of-46 shots. In addition, Kennedy {1-2-3}, Irwin {1-1-2}, McCarthy {1-1-2} and Tony Lucia {0-2-2} all had multi-point games for the Sharks.

Devils forward Brad Mills gave the Devils an early 1-0 lead with a power play goal, his fifth goal of the season, at 3:09 of the first period. With Sharks forward Marek Viedensky in the penalty box for interference and the puck inside the Sharks zone, Devils forward Mattias Tedenby sent a pass from on top of the right face-off circle over to Mills, who fired a one-timer on net from the top of the left slot that beat Sateri on the blocker side for the goal.

Devils captain Stephen Gionta extended the lead to 2-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 7:03. Rushing into the Sharks zone 2-on-1 down the right side, Mills skated into the right face-off circle and passed the puck over to Gionta, who from near the goal line, roofed the puck over Sateri as Sateri tried to stack the pads.

Just 1:55 later, Devils forward Myles Stoesz made it 3-0 with his first goal of the season off a slap shot of a bouncing puck from inside the right face-off circle that hit off the skates of Sharks defenseman Sena Acolatse, who was positioned on top of the crease, and went through the pads of Sateri for the goal.

Looking to inject some life into the Sharks, Frazer McLaren dropped the gloves with Stoesz on the ensuing face-off. The near 30 second fight saw McLaren land several hard shots on Stoesz before being separated by the linesmen. The fight was McLaren's fifth of the season and lifted McLaren passed Brad Staubitz as the franchise leader in penalty minutes with 466.

Last week, the Worcester Sharks earned four points out of a possible six in their three-in-three weekend and vaulted themselves back into the eighth and final playoff spot in the AHL Eastern Conference. Overall, the Sharks are 28-24-4-7 with 67 points and only trail the Manchester Monarchs by two points for the seventh seed.

The Sharks' three-in-three weekend started Friday night {March 16} at the DCU Center as the Sharks hosted the visiting Providence Bruins in their 11th meeting of the season and skated away with a 5-2 victory.

Nathan Moon, Jack Combs, Brian O'Hanley, Marek Viedensky and Tony Lucia scored for the Sharks while Tyson Sexsmith {13-12-2-7, 2.25 goals against average, .919 save percentage} stopped 21-of-23 shots. In addition, 10 different Sharks skaters registered a point and James Livingston had three assists.

Bruins forward Josh Hennessy gave the Bruins an early 1-0 lead with his 17th goal of the season just 96 seconds into the game. Corralling a loose puck behind the Sharks net, Bruins forward Craig Cunningham centered the puck in front for linemate Jamie Tardif, who had his shot blocked by several Sharks. However, the puck trickled to Hennessy, who was was positioned in the crease, and Hennessy poked the puck past Sexsmith for the goal.

Moon tied the game for the Sharks with his 11th goal of the season at 14:31. Holding the puck at the top of the left point of the Bruins zone, Lucia sent a centering feed for Livingston, who had his shot stopped by Bruins goalie Michael Hutchinson. However, Hutchinson left a rebound that Moon, who was crashing the net, was able to jam home for the tying goal.

Combs gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead with his power play goal, 14th goal of the season, at 16:35. Off a failed clear attempt by the Bruins penalty killers, Sharks captain Mike Moore held the puck inside the Bruins zone at the top of the center point and sent a pass down to the left face-off circle where Lucia fired a one-timer on net. Sharks forward Ben Guite, who was positioned in front of Hutchinson, got a piece of the puck before being cross checked down by Bruins defenseman Nathan McIver, and the puck trickled over to Combs, who was crashing the net, and Combs fired a backhanded shot from on top of the crease into an open net for the goal.

Woo Rewind - Sharks home woes continue

Worcester Sharks forward John McCarthy leads the team in scoring {15-21-36} and is tied with linemate Brandon Mashinter for the team lead in goals {15}. Photo courtesy of www.sharksahl.com.

Last week, the Worcester Sharks {26-23-4-7 with 63 points} continued their five game home stand by hosting a three-in-three weekend at the DCU Center. Unfortunately for the Sharks, their home woes continued as they lost two-of-three to fall below .500 on home ice {13-14-0-2} and are now one of three teams in the AHL to have a losing record at home.

Despite the home woes, the Sharks trail the Albany Devils by only one point for the eighth spot in the AHL Eastern Conference playoffs and trial the Manchester Monarchs by two points for the seventh spot. While the Sharks do have games in hand, the Sharks are tied with the Adirondack Phantoms for ninth and hold a slim lead over the 10th-14th place teams {Portland Pirates and Springfield Falcons have 62 points; Providence Bruins have 61 points; Syracuse Crunch have 60 points}.

On Friday night {March 9}, the Sharks hosted the Pirates in their 10th meeting of the season and skated away with a 6-4 victory. Curt Gogol, Brandon Mashinter, John McCarthy, Tony Lucia, Nathan Moon and Tim Kennedy scored for the Sharks while Tyson Sexsmith {12-11-2-7, 2.19 goals against average, .922 save percentage} stopped 38-of-42 shots.

11 different Sharks players, including Sexsmith, registered a point while the top line of Mashinter {1-1-2}, Kennedy {1-2-3} and McCarthy {1-2-3} combined for eight points. Moon {1-1-2} had a multi-point game as well.

Gogol gave the Sharks an early 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season just 28 seconds into the game. Winning a battle for the puck on the end board on the left side of the Pirates zone, Gogol skated behind the Pirates net and stuffed the puck through the pads of Pirates goalie Justin Pogge from behind the goal line on the right side for the goal. Ryan Del Monte was credited with the assist.

Mashinter extended the lead to 2-0 with his team leading 15th goal of the season at 12:43. After Kennedy won a face-off in the right face-off circle of the Pirates zone, McCarthy cut through the face-off circle to corral the puck and fired a backhanded shot on net from the right corner. Pogge made the save but left a rebound that Mashinter, who was positioned right on top of the goalie crease, knocked into the net on the glove side for the goal.
