When You're Not What You Are

So, I watched my first game live last night and came away with three distinct impressions.

  1. The Sharks are one of if not the FASTEST team in the league - but they don't play to that speed.  Other than Michalek's shorthanded breakaway I never saw anyone use their speed.
  1. The Sharks are one of if not the YOUNGEST team in the league - but they don't play with the frenetic energy a young team plays with.
  1. The Sharks are one of if not the BIGGEST team in the league - but they don't play to their size. There is almost never someone in front of the net, and it almost seems like they don't realize they are bigger and stronger than almost everyone else on the ice because they almost seem to avoid contact instead of initiating it...almost a bunch of Mike Rathje's!!!

This isn't something new.  I don't think this team has had an identity for a few years.  And for that the blame can be placed on any number of people.  But, the only way it gets fixed is for all of them to come together and create an identity for this team to rally behind.

Let's abandon the thinking that we can play anyone's style, because that thinking has led us to be OK at most styles.  Instead let's PLAY the SHARKS STYLE, and expect that other teams will adapt to our speed, or to our youthful energy, or to our size.

The great thing is that the team gets to decide which style fits them the best.  They just need to PICK ONE!!
