Sharks Acquire Brian Campbell

Today GM Doug Wilson traded Steve Bernier and their 2008 first round pick for three time allstar blue liner Brian Campbell

Here is what the San Jose Sharks website had to say about Campbell:

In 2007-08, Campbell has 43 points (5 goals, 38 assists) in 63 games and is third among NHL blueliners in assists and seventh in points. In 2006-07, Campbell set a career high with 48 points and a +28 plus/minus rating.

and

In the past two seasons, Campbell has played an amazing 34 playoff games and posted 13 points.

Awesome

Fantastic trade, and I would assume that Wilson is confident he can resign Campbell - much like Rivet last year. Bernier may blossom in Buffalo, but it became increasingly clear that it wasn't going to happen in San Jose.  I'd venture that 6 years at 6 million would be sufficient to keep Campbell around. Looks like Setoguchi is going to get his real shot.

I like this trade on 2 conditions:
  1. Wilson resigns Campbell, because you can't give up two first round picks (Bernier was a first rounder) without getting a first round quality player back.
  1. Wilson trades Ernhoff or Carle for a first rounder after the season is over.

This is going to be a very deep draft and a team built on its farm system like the Sharks can't afford not to be a part of it.  When the season is over, D. Wilson needs to take a long look at all the restricted free agents on the team, decide who he wants to keep, and trade whomever is expendable to allow the Sharks to participate in this draft and keep costs down so the Sharks don't end up like the Rangers.

Also, I'm a bit scared about loosing Bernier.  Although it seems like he's much older because he's been playing for the Sharks for 2 and a half years, the guy is only 22 and has tons of room to grow.

Joe Thornton does not shower. He swims in the tears of Bruins fans.
