2013 NHL Trade Deadline: What else does Doug Wilson have up his sleeve?

After turning three underperforming veterans on expiring contracts into a slew of draft picks, most GMs would simply call it a day. Not Doug Wilson, apparently. With the Sharks now down to twelve healthy forwards and six healthy defensemen, he might not be done dealing yet and spoke to the media about the possibility of further trades occurring prior to today’s 12PM deadline:

Between now and tomorrow, we certainly have a lot of picks we could utilize. We certainly have players that people like, that are players that we like also. I don’t know what will unfold tomorrow. But, I always take any call, and sometimes you get surprised on certain things.

We like the way our team is playing. If we weren’t playing as well as we have in the last little while, we might be looking at some different things. But, right now, the way the group looks and how everybody falls into certain roles, we’re pleased. But, we’re always looking at ways to get better.

Replenishing the team’s forward depth has to be considered a priority following the trade of Ryane Clowe but prices are likely to be high with so few teams considering themselves legitimate sellers. If Phoenix is looking to unload players despite being just two points out of a playoff spot, David Moss and Radim Vrbata would each look terrific in a Sharks sweater, although both have an additional year remaining on their contracts and it seems unlikely Vrbata would actually be available, let alone on the cheap. Wojtek Wolski is more of a bargain pick-up having been a healthy scratch of late for the Capitals despite auspicious underlying numbers and it’s very possible he can be had for a song. The free-falling Jets might be looking to shake things up; reuniting Joe Pavelski with Kyle Wellwood certainly isn’t the worst move the Sharks could make.

The pickings are slim but it would be surprising if the Sharks make it to the deadline without adding another roster player. Let the fun begin.
