After placing forwards Bracken Kearns and John McCarthy on waivers yesterday, the Sharks announced that the two have cleared and been assigned to Worcester along with waiver-exempt defenseman Matt Tennyson. The team also made official their re-signing of James Sheppard and Nick Petrecki.
The end result of these moves is that the Sharks’ finalized 23-man roster appears to be set, although it only contains 22 players for the time being. Here’s the breakdown:
Forwards (13): Joe Thornton, Logan Couture, Michal Handzus, Andrew Desjardins, Patrick Marleau, Ryane Clowe, T.J. Galiardi, James Sheppard, Frazer McLaren, Joe Pavelski, Martin Havlat, Tommy Wingels, Adam Burish
Defensemen (8): Dan Boyle, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Brent Burns, Brad Stuart, Justin Braun, Douglas Murray, Matt Irwin, Nick Petrecki
Goalies (2): Antti Niemi, Thomas Greiss
Injured Reserve (1): Jason Demers
With one roster spot still available, the Sharks could potentially sign a free agent (I’ll take Scott Gomez, please) but more likely they’ll retain roster flexibility by keeping that slot open, potentially to recall Kearns, McCarthy or a different Worcester player in the near future seeing as re-entry waivers are no longer part of the league’s CBA.
51 hours until puck drop. Get stoked.
UPDATE: Per Kurz, Burns will begin the season on the active roster even though he isn’t expected to play against Calgary on Sunday.
