Connor McDavid out long term, will miss "months"

The Sharks are slated to play the Oilers on Dec. 9.

The Calder Trophy might need a new nameplate as hands-down favorite and the latest in a long line of Edmonton franchise savers was injured last night against the Flyers.

McDavid will have collarbone surgery. The expected recovery time is "months," which is about as specific as we can expect to get from an NHL team.

San Jose is scheduled to play Edmonton four times this season, with the first coming on Dec. 9. Obviously McDavid won't be back by early December, and it's unlikely he'll be playing when the Sharks host the Oilers on Jan. 14. The final two meetings of the season come on March 8 and March 24, the latter of the two will be at home.

There's also a chance, however small, that McDavid will play some games in the AHL to get back to 100 percent — meaning your first shot at seeing The Next Big Thing might be at a Barracuda game.

Get well soon, Connor. An entire metropolitan area is counting on you.
