Three years ago today, it was “dream, no reality.”
On October 8, 2013, Tomas Hertl became then the fourth-youngest player to score four goals in an NHL game, scoring a goal that was perhaps best summed up by longtime Sharks color commentator Drew Remenda’s reaction.
“Are you kidding me?”
Hertl’s between-the-legs, top-shelf stunner was his sixth goal in his first three games in the NHL, and happened with his mom and girlfriend in the stands, no less. The goal, coupled with his smiling, permanently quotable postgame interview, endured the Czech forward to Sharks fans and most of the hockey world, including the goalie he scored on.
There were some exceptions, with an expected backlash from the hockey world’s resident curmudgeons. Of course, Joe Thornton silenced the haters with a legendary response of his own, which we even put on a t-shirt.
It was just the beginning of Tomas Hertl’s time with the Sharks, before he rehabbed with seniors. and before we learned of his love of Dave & Buster’s, but what a start to his time in teal nonetheless. After dominating down the stretch alongside Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski, hopefully another hot start on the top line is in the cards three years after he debuted there.
Three years later, it’s still dream, no reality.
