Sharks recall Daniel O’Regan, put Tomas Hertl on injured reserve

No, I didn’t see that coming.

The Sharks placed Tomas Hertl on injured reserve today, solidifying our fears that the center will be out for an extended period of time. In a related move, San Jose called up Boston University product Daniel O’Regan.

San Jose signed O’Regan to an entry level deal after he graduated from BU this summer. The Sharks drafted him in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. The center has 11 points, five goals and six assists, in 11 games with the Barracuda this season.

O’Regan may get thrust into a center role with the Sharks right away on the fourth line, with Chris Tierney slotting back into the third line center role. My assumption is that O’Regan will play immediately — otherwise they would leave him down in the Barracuda.

San Jose hosts the New Jersey Devils tonight and my guess is O’Regan will make his NHL debut. We’ll have a story from the morning skate later on with line combinations. Hertl can’t be replaced, but we’ve got our second rookie debut of the season to look forward to.
