The deal is done. Brent Burns and the San Jose Sharks have reached an eight year, $8 million a year contract extension that will keep the Wookiee in San Jose for a very long time. Pierre Lebrun broke the news on Twitter:

This has been a point of concern for Sharks fans this year, and no doubt the size of the contract will give others heart palpitations as well. We knew this was going to be expensive — we were right.

Burns is one of the most valuable players in the NHL and now the money matches the value. This is a move the Sharks had to make and one that comes as a sting of karma after underpaying Marc-Edouard Vlasic all these years.

We'll have more on this later, but for now all you need to know is that the Wookiee will call San Jose home for a very long time.
