Quick Bite: Sharks top Coyotes in Pacific Division showdown

San Jose picked up two points before leaving for a five-game road trip.

Coming off a tough shootout loss to the Flames, the Sharks rebounded with a 4–1 win over the Coyotes behind 22 saves by Martin Jones and goals from Matt Tennyson, Chris Tierney, Tomas Hertl, and Joonas Donskoi.

It took San Jose less than three minutes to get on the board. Playing just his second game since replacing the injured Brenden Dillon in the lineup, Tennyson fired a long shot from near the blue line that Louis Domingue never saw to pick up his second goal of the season and give his team a 1–0 lead.

All four Sharks lines did a good job controlling play in the first, but it was the fourth line that did all the work on the scoresheet. Tierney doubled the Sharks' lead inside the final minute of the period, getting position on Oliver Ekman-Larsson and tapping a gorgeous pass from a streaking Brent Burns past Domingue.

A hooking penalty to Marc-Edouard Vlasic near the end of the first gave the Coyotes 90 seconds of power play time to start the second. Jones did his part to keep Arizona off the board while Vlasic was in the box, but Martin Hanzal got behind the Sharks defense and beat Jones a few seconds after the penalty expired to cut San Jose's lead to 2–1.

The Sharks carried that 2–1 lead through the rest of the second and into the third, killing off a holding penalty to Tommy Wingels along the way. Hertl deflected a shot from Vlasic into the net at 10:37 of the third, but the goal was immediately waved off because his stick was above the crossbar. Not to be deterred, Hertl picked up a goal that did count 21 seconds later, deflecting a shot from Burns past Domingue for the two-goal lead.

A Michael Stone penalty for a head shot on Dainius Zubrus gave the Sharks a late power play, and Donskoi added an empty net goal on the man advantage to help San Jose pick up two points before heading to Florida to start a five-game road trip.

Sharks goals (assists): Matt Tennyson (Logan Couture, Melker Karlsson), Chris Tierney (Brent Burns, Melker Karlsson), Tomas Hertl (Brent Burns, Paul Martin), Joonas Donskoi (Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Joe Thornton)
