Sharks vs Kings Game 3 Preview: Protecting home ice

New, comments

San Jose's record at SAP Center leaves something to be desired. Tonight would be a good time to erase that talking point.

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

After a pair of important road victories, the Sharks head home to SAP Center with a 3-0 series lead on their mind. Despite playing reasonably well at home this season, the Sharks' record leaves something to be desired. Injuries and a goaltending slump play into that, naturally, but it'll be a talking point heading into tonight's action. A convincing win would all but make it disappear.

Easier said than done of course. Good goaltending and strong possession play have paced the Sharks to a 2-0 lead, and it'll take more of the same to hold off the Kings in San Jose. Both wins came by just one goal and the Kings had oodles of chances to score that game-tying goal in each of the first two contests of the series. So how about getting some breathing room tonight?

Last Meeting

San Jose jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up in a nearly wire-to-wire victory.

Storylines

  • Alec Martinez missed the first two games for the Kings and it has had a noticeable impact on Los Angeles' defensive play. He's still questionable to return.
  • San Jose hasn't let the Kings' physical play get in their heads and they'll have to continue that to have success in this series.
  • Joe Pavelski has four points in two games and has been an absolutely force to be reckoned with.
  • Martin Jones has been solid in net — keeping any thought of playing James Reimer as an afterthought. If San Jose wins tonight, will Reimer get a game to spell Jones?
