When Will Arnett takes the stage at the Hard Rock Hotel on Wednesday night, Brent Burns will be the only San Jose Shark with a chance at taking home hardware. Sort of, anyway. The NHL 17 cover will also be unveiled and Joe Pavelski has a shot at taking home that honor.

As a quick refresher, here’s a look at this year’s Norris Trophy Finalists, including the Wookiee we’ve come to know and love.

The Nominees

Brent Burns

Erik Karlsson

Drew Doughty

The Numbers

Brent Burns: 27G, 48A, 75P, 1.3FF%

Erik Karlsson: 16G, 66A, 82P, 6.5FF%

Drew Doughty: 14G, 37A, 51P, 4.3FF%

The Case

Brent Burns: He scored an incredible number of goals for a defensive player and took large strides in his defensive game. Burns now seems as comfortable as he ever has on the defensive side of his game and he’s an absolute force of nature for San Jose.

Erik Karlsson: Continuing to be the best offensive defender in the NHL, Karlsson also posted phenomenal possession numbers. He was one of the few bright spots for an Ottawa team that underachieved their own expectations.

Drew Doughty: Continued to be a solid, shutdown defender. He wasn’t necessarily the best defender this year, but he’s been elite for several years and has never won the Norris.

My Take

Karlsson probably should win this award, I’d be thrilled if Burns won and this all means that Doughty probably will win it. Life isn’t fair.

NBC Sports will broadcast the NHL Awards at 4 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, June 22.
