Top 25 Sharks Under 25: No. 5 Nikolay Goldobin

Does Goldobin have a spot on the Sharks this season?

NHL: Preseason-Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

When Logan Couture broke his leg just a week into the 2015-16 season, the Sharks called up Nikolay Goldobin from the Barracuda. Just days after leaving his teenage years, Goldobin made his NHL debut against the New Jersey Devils.

Goldobin only lasted nine games with the Sharks before he was sent back to the Barracuda, but his brief cup of coffee provided an outlook of what his future could be. Despite looking lost at times when on the ice, Goldobin certainly possesses the skill set to become an impact scoring forward.

With one likely forward spot available during training camp, it seems that Timo Meier - not Goldobin - would win that position battle and crack the Sharks Opening Night roster for 2016-17. However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone seeing Goldobin make a few trips up to the big club while continuing to develop his game with the Barracuda. If all breaks well, Goldobin could be a big piece of the 2017-2018 San Jose Sharks.

Name: Nikolay Goldobin

Age (as of 10/12/16): 21

Position: Right wing

2015-16 Team: Sharks/Barracuda

Where he’ll (probably) be next year: Barracuda

What we like: Speed makes him extremely dangerous when attacking with the puck.

What to improve on: Needs to get bigger and stronger as he’s the type of scoring forward other teams will try to stop.
