Matt Nieto gets to stay out of the American Hockey League for now as the Colorado Avalanche picked up the Long Beach Native on waivers. That means his career in teal is officially over, or at least on a hiatus, as he joins the Central squad looking very likely to get the first overall pick in the 2017 entry draft.
With the Avalanche dead last in the standings we can assume he was snatched up quickly by the Denver squad. While he’s sitting on just two points and a goose egg in goals, the Avalanche are certainly lacking in depth this season and Nieto will do a job for them.
His cap hit comes off the books immediately for the Sharks which will be a nice relief. I’d be surprised if this is the last move we see San Jose make in the coming days. Thanks for everything, Nieto. I’m going to miss gratuitous references to Long Beach and you’ll always be our Spark Plug.
