A little ex-Shark on ex-Shark action to warm your heart / make you sob on a Friday night. Matt Nieto, in his first game with the Colorado Avalanche, was awarded a penalty shot against the New York Islanders in the first period. He stepped up to take his shot against another former Shark in Thomas Greiss, who has been with New York since last season.
This is not the greatest penalty shot attempt in the world. Nieto drifts from side to side a bit before trying to go to Greiss’ glove side. The netminder easily nabs the puck to deny Nieto from scoring his first goal of the season.
Greiss played in 44 games with San Jose and posted a .912 save percentage. He was with San Jose from 2007-2013. Nieto, who was just claimed off waivers by the Avalanche yesterday, was drafted by the Sharks in the second round of the 2011 entry draft. He’s from Long Beach, California.
