The ‘Cuda are rolling

Mantas Armalis got a rare start as the San Jose Barracuda traveled to Bakersfield for a one-night road trip against the Condors. The Barracuda were trying to maintain first place in the Pacific Division while the Condors are fighting for their playoff lives.

It was San Jose that got the best of the Central Californian squad as Joakim Ryan scored in overtime to give the Barracuda a 4-3 victory. It’s the seventh win in a row for San Jose.

The Barracuda came out of the gate fast and scored their first goal just 3:24 into the first period as Buddy Robinson scored his 9th of the season with assists going to Dan Kelly (2) and Mirco Muller (9). The lead would not last long however as Mirco Mueller gave up the puck in front of the net with a no-look pass which leads to Josh Currie scoring his 9th goal of the season with assists to Taylor Beck (33) and Bryce Aneloski (3).

After dominating the first half of the period the Barracuda would go flat and the Condors would extend their lead on the power play with a goal from Patrick Russell, his fourth of the year with assists from Greg Chase (5) and Griffin Reinhart (7). The Barracuda would end the period being outshot 10-9.

Bakersfield would strike first in the second period as Jesse Puljujarvi would score his fifth goal of his short AHL season at 0:33 with assists going to Jere Sallinen (3) and Dillon Simpson (2). Puljujarvi seems to be gaining his confidence back after a rough start on the NHL’s Oilers that saw him play in the NHL for far too long. If the Condors are to make it back into the playoffs he will need to play a large role in it.

The momentum would shift back to the Barracuda though as Buddy Robinson would keep the Barracuda within one at 1:27 of the second period with assists going to Ryan Carpenter (13), and Dan Kelly (3). That would be all the scoring in the second period but the Barracuda would take control of the game out-shooting their opponents 8-5 while Armalis finally looked settled after a slow start.

The momentum gained in the second period would pay dividends to start the third period as John McCarthy would tie the game for the Barracuda at 1:38 with his 11th goal of the season. Barclay Goodrow would get his tenth assist of the season on the goal. It was all Barracuda in the third as Condors goaltender Jonas Gustavsson would be under siege. Despite facing 12 shots in the third period he would hold on to get the Condors a point and force overtime.

Although the shot totals were tied at two a piece the Barracuda had the better chances before Joakim Ryan scored to give the Barracuda the win in overtime on his sixth goal of the year with Colin Blackwell (5) assisting on the goal.

The Barracuda will face the Ontario Reign tonight at SAP Center puck drop is at 5 P.M. Pacific Time. The Barracuda extended their winning streak to seven games. The final shots on goal were 32-20 in favor of the Barracuda. The Barracuda also improved their points percentage to .683 which makes them the first place team in the Western Conference and 3rd overall in the AHL.
