After a three-point game against the Tucson Roadrunners on Tuesday night, Nikolay Goldobin received a call-up to the San Jose Sharks today. It is not clear if he will see action against the Florida Panthers tonight or if this is merely a monetary reward for good work in the American Hockey League. He’s certainly earned that. The forward has 37 points in 43 games this year and is a 0.77 points per game player in the AHL.
San Jose also recalled Timo Meier and Tim Heed back to the big club. Sorry, Marcus Sorensen.
If he plays tonight, I expect him to see action on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. He has seen action with them in the past and fits in well with their style of play: the kid can score. Goldobin’s defensive game has improved this season, but don’t expect him to go up for the Selke anytime soon. That’s okay — the Sharks don’t need him to.
You’ll recall Goldobin played in nine NHL games in the 2015-16 season. He scored one goal and potted an assist before being sent back to the Barracuda. Unless he sets the world on fire, expect this call-up to be a temporary one. Regardless, it’s one Goldobin deserves. I hope we get to see him tonight.
