NHL player safety announced Red Wings right winger Gustav Nyquist will be suspended the next six games for his high sticking penalty against Wild defender Jared Spurgeon in Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Minnesota.
With about 5:50 remaining in the first period, Spurgeon and Nyquist were in a scrum for the puck along the boards in the Red Wings zone. With Spurgeon continuing to check Nyquist in the back on the play, he retaliated very aggressively and struck Spurgeon in the face with his stick.
Nyquist received just a double minor on the play. Many argued Nyquist deserved a five minute major, plus a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct for what happened. Nyquist will not return until the Red Wings play the Edmonton Oilers on the road on March 4th. Gustav is lucky this was only six games and not longer. Based on the severity of his penalty, he could have been, and probably should have been suspended for much longer.
