The Sharks (33-21-8, 2nd Pacific) take the ice looking to forget a sad back-to-back and finish up their Central division road trip at .500 in St. Paul tonight to visit the Wild (34-20-7, 3rd Central). Minnesota is rolling, sitting on a 12-3-3 record in their last 18, including a tidy three game winning streak. Most recently, they dominated the fire sale New York Rangers to the tune of 4-1, in a game in which the team's points (58) and goals (29) leader, continuing his career resurgence from last season, Eric Staal, tallied two goals and two assists. Stall is on fire, marking ten goals and 11 assists for 21 points in his last 16 games.
The Sharks, on the other hand, struggled last week. After a win over the Blues in St. Louis, San Jose recorded two regulation losses to the Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks in as many nights, out scored 10-2. However, the Sharks' effort in Chicago on Friday night should inspire some hope, as they put 43 shots on goaltender Jean-Francois Berube, but succumbed to the curse of the back up goalie once again. Before those two losses, the Sharks went 5-1-0 in their previous six, so there's a real possibility that this is just a bump in the road for the boys in blue.
A win tonight would add up to a 2-2-0 record on the road trip, which would go a long way to holding off the similarly struggling Flames and Ducks, both of whom sit just one point behind San Jose for second place in the Pacific division. While big trades and rumors have dominated the discussion one day before the NHL's trade deadline, there are still games to play, and every two points are valuable.
Go get 'em.
