An annoyance I’m sure the Sharks have about retooling on the fly is that the draft picks you’re working with, largely, might not be your own. Ahead of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson has just two of the Sharks’ seven original picks. In making up for that, Wilson has acquired five picks, leaving the Sharks without a pick in rounds three, four and six.
So where did the Sharks’ picks go?
Well, there’s the first-round pick that no one could have predicted would become a lottery pick in 2020. It was traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of the package to acquire Erik Karlsson, a trade you make again every time and twice on Tuesdays — though maybe next time around it’d be lottery protected. Ah, well. Hindsight, am I right?
The Sharks’ third-round selection now belongs to the Detroit Red Wings, traded on Feb. 25, 2019 in exchange for Gustav Nyquist. Because the Sharks did not advance to the Stanley Cup Final and Nyquist did not re-sign in San Jose, this pick did not upgrade to a second-round selection. The Red Wings also received the Sharks’ second-round selection in 2019, which they used to draft defender Albert Johansson.
The Calgary Flames now own the Sharks’ fourth-round pick in a trade tree resulting from San Jose trading it to the Montreal Canadiens at the 2019 NHL draft for their fourth-round selection (108 overall), which they used to draft forward Yegor Spiridonov.
The Toronto Maple Leafs own the Sharks’ seventh-round pick, the sole cost for forward Eric Fehr on Feb. 20, 2018. And the Sharks and Senators swapped picks in the Mike Hoffman trade, so the Sharks lost out on their own sixth-rounder.

- Pick 56: Acquired from the Washington Capitals on Feb. 18, 2020, along with a third-round pick in 2021, in exchange for defender Brenden Dillon. The Capitals previously acquired this pick from the Colorado as part of the package for Andre Burakovsky’s signing rights in June 2019.
- Pick 126: Acquired from the Ottawa Senators on June 19, 2019, along with Mike Hoffman and Cody Donaghey, in exchange for forward Mikkel Boedker, defender Julius Bergman and the Sharks’ sixth-round selection (158 overall) in 2020.
- Pick 201: Acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Washington’s pick 211 in the seventh round of the 2019 Draft. The Penguins used the pick to draft defender Santeri Airola.
- Pick 210: Acquired from the Washington Capitals, along with their pick 211, at the 2019 NHL Draft, in exchange for San Jose’s fifth-round pick (153 overall). The Capitals used pick 153 to draft defender Martin Hugo Has./
