The waiver wire has been buzzing as preseason and training camp concluded and NHL teams are cutting down their rosters to get to a 23-man opening night line up. Here’s the most important waiver wire news you may have missed.

Metropolitan Division

Pittsburgh Penguins: Brian Boyle attended the Pittsburgh Penguins training camp on a Professional Try-Out (PTO), and was signed to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

New York Islanders: Michael Dal Colle didn’t receive a qualifying offer earlier this season, and instead signed after training camp as a Free Agent (no financial terms disclosed yet, the assumption is that his one year deal is for league minimum). Dal Colle has since been waived by the Islanders for the purposes of assigning him to the AHL.

Philadelphia Flyers: Cam York, the Flyers’ upstart defenseman drafted in at 14th overall in 2019 was sent down to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL) for further development after a successful camp. York made his NHL debut for the Flyers in the 2020-21 season, playing three games with the club.

Patrick Brown was claimed off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights by the Flyers. Brown is a C/RW, and played four games with the Knights last season.

Washington Capitals: Former Capitals prospect Axel Jonsson-Fjallby was placed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres, and the Capitals claimed Jonsson-Fjallby on Oct. 11. New York Rangers: Mika Zibanejad, C, was signed to an eight-year, $68 million dollar contract extension.

Vitali Kravtsov did not make the Rangers’ opening night roster, and has since refused to report to the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL). The Rangers are expected to suspend Kravtsov, and have already given permission for Kravtsov’s agent to speak to other teams for a potential trade. Kravtsov played 20 games with the Rangers last season, putting up 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 PIMs and a -6.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Mikko Lehtonen re-signed with the Blue Jackets to a one-year deal over the off-season, but refused to report to the Cleveland Monsters (AHL) after clearing waivers. The Blue Jackets have suspended Lehtonen and placed him on unconditional waivers for the purposes of a contract buy-out.
