Deep Blue Sea: How San Jose fits the bill for Eichel

Plus early season injuries, Brady Tkachuk’s new contract and more in today’s news and notes.

While he’s sitting out the season and waiting on medical care, every NHL fanbase is hoping their team can find a way to land Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel.

It hasn’t been worth thinking about much for San Jose Sharks fans, who assume general manager Doug Wilson would have a difficult time making room for Eichel’s $10 million contract through 2026. But with Evander Kane’s future with the team in question, suddenly the Sharks could have cap flexibility and shouldn’t have a problem waiting on Eichel’s months-long timeline to return.

On TSN’s OverDrive radio show, Pierre LeBrun made this point, as well. In addition to the Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames, LeBrun (who is fairly plugged into San Jose’s front office, as far a national media goes) also names San Jose as a potential landing spot for Eichel, citing the reasons above, as well as Eichel’s age (he turns 25 at the end of the month) as reasons the Sharks would be a good fit.

We also know that the Sharks and Sabres have a good front office relationship, with several trades between the teams over the last few years and a potential trade for Sam Reinhart on the table at last summer’s draft.
