Day one of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft is finally here Sharks fans and while we’re not feeling the same buzz as we did last season when we were preparing to welcome Macklin Celebrini into the fold and then got the thrill of seeing Sam Dickinson don a teal jersey, we are still pretty excited. Now that the Sharks have a number one center, adding another key piece with the second overall pick in today’s draft will sure feel good.
So here’s what you need to know:
What picks do the Sharks have in Round 1?
As of this writing, the Sharks have the second overall pick and the 30th overall pick. As we know, things can change on draft day. This is a decentralized draft, the first in the NHL, so there could be a phone call at any moment indicating the Sharks trade up or down to swing the picks another way. At this point, we’re operating under the assumption that we’re picking at second and 30th.
At second, there’s the outside chance that the New York Islanders DO NOT pick Matthew Schaefer, in which case, the Sharks would be happy to snatch him up at two. That’s not likely to happen. The odds on favorite is that the Sharks take Michael Misa, a dynamic, playmaking center who played alongside Sharks prospect Igor Chernyshov with the Saginaw Spirit last season. Then, there’s the dark horse Anton Frondell, whom the Sharks are rumored to be interested in, but that could be draft day gamesmanship.
30th overall is tougher to decipher since you’re thinking a lot more about what the teams above you in the draft are doing. Look for the Sharks to lean defenseman if the team gets its forward at second overall. We compiled a list of potential draftees earlier this week.
San Jose will be one of the last teams to draft on day one, but set your alarms for day two because the Sharks have the first pick of round two.
