2025 NHL Draft: Getting to know Teddy Mutryn

Now that the free agency window has died down a bit, we can jump back into some of the players that the San Jose Sharks drafted in the later rounds of the NHL draft. The Sharks had some downtime between the 53rd overall pick and this one, 95th on the board. So, the team had time to think. What it came away with was Teddy Mutryn, an 18-year-old power forward out of the U.S. National U18 Team. While Mutryn played most of his pre-draft season with the Chicago Steel in the USHL, he moved to the U18 team toward the end of the season.

Teddy Mutryn, C – Chicago Steel (USHL)

Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 210 pounds
Age/DOB: 18, Feb. 16, 2007
Shoots: Right
Chicago Steel (USHL): 47 games, 30 points, (17 G, 13 A), 71 PIMs
US U-18 (NTDP): 13 games, 2 points (1 G, 1 A), 4 PIMs
USNDTP (USHL): 4 games, 2 points (1 G, 1 A), 4 PIMs

Mutryn had 30 points in 47 games with the Chicago Steel last season. He is considered a gritty forward who plays a north-south style of hockey and has a strong shot. He’s likely returning to the USHL this season. He’s set to join Boston College, but not until 2026-27.

Most analysts found that picking him here in the third round wasn’t the best choice by the Sharks.

The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler was pretty damning of the pick. Wheeler called the Sharks winners of the draft, but in his draft analysis, said, “The only Sharks pick that left me scratching my head was the selection of Teddy Mutryn in the third round. I didn’t view him as a draft pick. Otherwise, I thought they did really well.”

What the scouts have to say about Mutryn

Elite Prospects Draft Guide: “A strong straight-line skater with a powerful shot, Mutryn has the prototypical power forward style. He fires off the rush after driving through traffic, faking before curling the puck around a stick. If there’s some space, he drops the shoulder to get to the net. Once there, he creates traffic and spins off contact for rebounds. Mutryn also brings puck-retrieving and defensive value, often leveraging his desire to make contact to win possession.”

CBS Sports Fantasy Hockey: “Mutryn, who can play both center and the wing, is known for his compete level. At 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, he’s very hard to knock off the puck. His offensive skills are average, but Mutryn is willing to go to the difficult areas of the ice to make a play.”

The Athletic’s Corey Pronman: “Mutryn is a hardworking forward with good speed who can play center or wing. He has good enough hands and finishing ability, but he doesn’t make many plays or show much offensive IQ.”

Meantime, BC Interruption, which tracks Boston College Hockey, has been keeping an eye on Mutryn. The site believes that Mutryn’s style of play can “slot into basically any system and make an impact.”
