Quick Bite: Sharks Trounce Capitals, Win Third Straight

San Jose Sharks wins their third straight game to open the season and Martin Jones records back-to-back shut outs as they soundly defeat the Washington Capitals 5-0 in D.C.

The San Jose Sharks just keep on rolling. Martin Jones recorded back-to-back shutouts and the Sharks won their first coaches challenge in a 5-0 victory over the Washington Capitals in D.C.

San Jose wasted no time getting started went on to dominate the pace of the game against a frustrated Capitals team. Special teams saw a significant amount of ice time. The Sharks power play scored early, but was silenced by Washington's penalty killers for the remainder of the night. San Jose's penalty kill was effective all night, ultimately rendering the Capitals 0/4 with the man-advantage.

The Sharks third and fourth lines both notched goals tonight, another good sign for Peter DeBoer's plans to "enforce a four-line identity." After returning from injury and experiencing a sophomore slump last year, Tomas Hertl looks to be right at home in his role as the Sharks third line center.

Behind the bench, Peter DeBoer is doing all sorts of things right. With a dash of luck and some help from the Toronto Video Review Room, netminder Martin Jones continued his impressive streak between the pipes. For the first time ever, and to the shock of Sharks fans across the league, San Jose won their first coaches challenge to preserve Jones' 31-save shut out.

Here is a look at the controversial (no) goal, eventually overturned after video review revealed goaltender interference.

Matt Nieto and Chris Tierney tacked on two empty-netters to complete the Sharks dominant outing against the Washington Capitals.

The Sharks are 3-0-0 now, and I couldn't be happier with the way this team is playing. All four lines are producing, Jones is silencing doubters, and I'm past cautious optimism and diving head first into whatever this Sharks team has to offer.
