This afternoon marks another tough test for the San Jose Sharks as the Colorado Avalanche arrive in the Bay Area. The Avs are 7-4-1 this season and currently sit atop the Central Division with 18 points. The good news for the Sharks is that this Colorado team could be a bit road weary. This is a short road trip for the Avalanche, but the second of a back-to-back series that started off in Las Vegas yesterday. Colorado beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2, but then had to travel to San Jose and now have a day game today as well. It’s a short turnaround and travel. The young Sharks could jump on the Avs and cause some trouble.
The Avalanche comes to town just a few days after signing Martin Necas to a new eight-year contract extension. Necas scored just 41 seconds into the game against Vegas, clearly inspired by the $11.5 million annually that will kick in next season.
There are a few familiar faces in the Avalanche lineup. Brent Burns now wears an Avs jersey. He also scored against the Golden Knights yesterday, his first for Colorado. Mackenzie Blackwood is expected to start in the net for the Avalanche. Blackwood has missed the beginning part of this season recovering from surgery. He’s now healthy and ready to play, so it’s only fitting that he open the season against his old team.
San Jose Sharks lines today
There was no morning skate today, and Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky was mum during his pregame media availability. We’ll make some guesses that Michael Misa likely finds his way back into the lineup with both Ryan Reaves and Adam Gaudette hurt. Sam Dickinson plays. With how well Alex Nedeljkovic played on Thursday we’re guessing he gets another start.
Here’s what the lines could look like:
Forwards
Tyler Toffoli – Macklin Celebrini – Will Smith
Philipp Kurashev – Alexander Wennberg – William Eklund
Collin Graf – Michael Misa – Jeff Skinner
Barclay Goodrow – Ty Dellandrea – Patrick Giles
Defense
Dmitry Orlov – Timothy Liljegren
Mario Ferraro – John Klingberg
Sam Dickinson – Shakir Mukhamadullin
Goaltenders
Alex Nedeljkovic
Yaroslav Askarov
Colorado Avalanche lines vs. San Jose Sharks
Since the Avs played against the Golden Knights yesterday and won, we don’t expect to see too many line changes. Look for one change in the net with Blackwood starting instead of Scott Wedgewood. Other than that, we don’t see much else changing.
Here’s what NHL.com reports the projected lines will be.
Forwards
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Ross Colton – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Gabriel Landeskog – Jack Drury – Victor Olofsson
Parker Kelly – Zakhar Bardakov – Gavin Brindley
Defense
Devon Toews – Cale Makar
Josh Manson – Brent Burns
Ilya Solovyov – Sam Malinski
Goaltenders
Mackenzie Blackwood
Scott Wedgewood
