Barclay Goodrow returning to San Jose?

Rumors are swirling that Barclay Goodrow is on his way back to the San Jose Sharks. Goodrow was placed on waivers by the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The report from Mollie Walker of the New York Post yesterday is that “… there is belief there is a pre-arranged deal for the Sharks to claim Goodrow.”

On the 32 Thoughts podcast this morning, Elliotte Friedman didn’t say that this is absolutely what’s happening, but he did confirm the initial reports.

“There is definitely a lot of smoke around San Jose,” said Friedman.

Wrinkles in the deal

However, Friedman is cautious to say this is a done deal.

San Jose finished last in the league, so the team would have first dibs on the 31-year-old.

But, as Friedman pointed out on 32 Thoughts, Goodrow has a 15-team no-trade list, and the likelihood that the worst team in the league is on the list is pretty good. Of course, there are ways around that.

“One of the things I’m kind of wondering about here is maybe Goodrow can’t be traded to San Jose, but because he doesn’t have a no-move clause, he can’t block being claimed by them on waivers,” said Friedman.

That means while Goodrow could block a trade to San Jose, but he has no recourse if San Jose picks him up off of waivers.

The waiver claim is 11 a.m. PT today, so we’ll have an answer soon.

What Goodrow can bring to the Sharks

Goodrow has three years remaining on a six-year, $21.85 million deal. It comes with a cap hit of $3,641,667. Goodrow’s cap hit is something the Rangers could not afford, but the Sharks need more money to get to the cap floor. The team is well below the cap floor heading into free agency. The floor is $65 million but the Sharks only have $51,629,167 committed to players as of today.

Of course, Sharks fans won’t mind paying that money to Goodrow. He was a fan favorite when he left San Jose, so it stands to reason he’ll be welcomed back with open arms.

What’s more, Goodrow has the veteran presence the team is looking for. Since leaving the Sharks, he’s won two Stanley Cups and was an important depth piece in the Rangers’ playoffs this past season. He’d teach the young players how to win.
