Barracuda fall in the shootout to Condors

Looking to extend their winning streak to a franchise best three games, the San Jose Barracuda were defeated 2-1 in the shootout by the Bakersfield Condors (AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers) in front of 7,554 fans at Rabobank Arena on Wednesday morning during a special school day game.

Goaltender Aaron Dell made 27-saves in net for the Barracuda, who did extend their point streak to a franchise best three games with their fifth point out of a possible six, while captain Bryan Lerg had the lone goal.

In a first period that saw both teams put five shots on goal, Condors forward Marc-Olivier Roy scored the period’s lone goal at 8:43 when he beat Dell with a wraparound shot on the right side for his first professional goal.

Despite out-shooting the Condors 18-7 in the second period and having a five minute power play as the result of Condors forward Matthew Ford elbowing Barracuda forward Ryan Carpenter in the head at 14:03, the Barracuda couldn’t get the puck past Condors goaltender Laurent Brossoit, who had 23 saves through 40-minutes.

Lerg broke Brossoit’s shutout bid at 6:38 of the third period when he deflected in Carpenter’s wrist shot from on top of the left circle for his team team leading sixth goal of the season. Barracuda defenseman Karl Stollery was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.

In a wide open overtime session, Barracuda forward Barclay Goodrow had the best chance to win the game with a breakaway near the end of the extra frame but Brossoit made his biggest save of the game.

After a scoreless two rounds in the shootout, Condors forward Ryan Hamilton beat Dell in the top of the third round to score what held up as the game-winning-goal.
