Barracuda offense continues to struggle in loss to Rampage

The San Jose Barracuda saw their season (and franchise) high winless streak extend to six games after suffering a 2-1 loss to the San Antonio Rampage (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche) at the AT&T Center on Friday night.

Forward Ryan Carpenter scored the lone goal for the Barracuda, who have been outscored 17-8 during the six game winless streak, while goaltender Troy Grosenick made 35-saves in net, 28 of which came in the first two periods.

After a spirited scrap between Barracuda forward Alex Gallant and Rampage defenseman Duncan Siemens at 2:41 of the first period, Carpenter put the Barracuda a head 1-0 at 7:59 when he deflected in defenseman Patrick McNally’s wrist shot from the left point off a face-off win in the left circle of the Rampage zone. Carpenter’s linemate Barclay Goodrow was credited with the other assist on the goal, which was Carpenter’s eighth of the season.

Inside the final five minutes of the period, Rampage forward Dennis Everberg scored two times in a near three minute span to give the Rampage a 2-1 lead heading into intermission. Everberg tied the game at 15:18 with his 12th goal of the season off a tap-in from the left side of the crease after a parallel shot on the right side from linemate Reid Petryk deflected off the stick of Barracuda defenseman Julius Bergman and landed inside the crease after floating over Grosenick.

Everberg scored what held up as the winning goal at 18:13 when off an own zone turnover by Barracuda defenseman Mirco Mueller, Everberg got the puck on top of the crease and beat Grosenick with a backhanded shot through the wickets for his 13th goal of the season.

In the third period, the Barracuda out-shot the Rampage 11-7 and had four power play opportunities, one of which came with under four minutes to play, but couldn’t get the tying goal past Rampage goaltender Roman Will, who finished with 29 saves for his seventh win of the season.

Barracuda forward John McCarthy was denied twice of the tying goal as he hit the post on one of the Barracuda’s third period power play’s and then was robbed by Will from point blank range with under five seconds remaining in the game. Will also robbed Barracuda forward Jeremy Langlois of the tying goal in the period when he stopped Langlois on a shorthanded breakaway with five minutes left to play.
