The trade deadline has come and gone, and both the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks made some moves at the deadline. The Blues did more selling than the Sharks at the deadline. It makes sense, the Blues are well out of the playoffs and need to restock the cupboards for a retool at the very least.
Today, the Blues traded defenseman Justin Faulk to the Detroit Red Wings for Justin Holl and Dmitri Buchelnikov and a pair of picks. St. Louis also traded captain Brayden Schenn to the New York Islanders for Jonathan Drouin and goaltender Marcus Gidlof and two more picks. Drouin could play for the Blues today, considering that the Islanders are also in San Jose, preparing to play the Sharks tomorrow. Getting two first-round picks out of these two trades is a good deal for the Blues, even if both of those first-rounders are likely to be in the latter half of this year’s draft.
Interestingly, the biggest piece the Blues were rumored to be trading did not get moved. St. Louis reportedly had center Robert Thomas on the block, but it sounds like the team either didn’t find a taker for him or didn’t get a good enough offer. Thomas is still with the team and will play tonight.
The Blues’ top scorer is Pavel Buchnevich. He has 38 points in 61 games. He, Jordan Kyrou and Jake Neighbours all lead the team with 14 goals apiece. In the net, Jordan Binnington shares duties with Joel Hofer. Binnington is having an off season with an 8-18-6 record and a .867 save percentage. Meantime, Hofer is doing better with a 15-11-3 record and a .901 save percentage.
This is the first of three meetings between the Sharks and the Blues, all three of which will take place in March. They’ll meet again on the 26th in St. Louis and then on the 30th in San Jose.
San Jose Sharks lines tonight
As for the Sharks, the team made one trade, sending Timothy Liljegren to the Washington Capitals. It also announced that Alex Nedeljkovic signed a new contract. Nedeljkovic gets the start in the net tonight, which should get him a big cheer from the crowd. It’s a well-earned contract for a player who quickly became a fan favorite for his play on the ice and his attitude off of it.
Other than that, there’s not likely going to be any changes in the lineup.

Keep an eye on the Blues’ lineup because the team might be short a defenseman. According to Andy Strickland, if Colton Parayko, who is considered day-to-day with an injury, can’t play tonight, and with the Faulk trade, the team doesn’t have the defensive depth at the moment.
If Parayko can’t play tonight and with Faulk traded, Blues could be short a Dman tonight in San Jose in the event they can’t get a player here.
