-Good to see Dillon end up with a positive scoring chance differential after two straight games in the red

-Nieto definitely had a impact on this game for the Sharks, having a hand in three of San Jose’s ten even strength scoring chances

-Despite the excitement over San Jose’s new-look bottom-six, they just didn’t produce much, with the best differential for a bottom-six player being a big “zero.”

-On the positive side of things, the Sharks’ “top pairing” of Hannan and Burns finished with positive scoring chance differentials last night, after getting absolutely wrecked last game

-As much as last night’s loss can be attributed to the bottom-six producing disappointingly little, I think a lot can be said for the fact that none of SJ’s top-six really did fantastic either. For whatever reason, Calgary’s depth was able to outperform or match San Jose’s depth, and Calgary’s top players were able to match that effort against SJ’s top players.

-As much as I hate to admit it, as Randy and Bakes mentioned last night, Bouma might just have been one of Calgary’s top players last night. He had a hand in five of Calgary’s eleven even strength scoring chances, and finished his night with a +4 scoring chance differential at evens.

-Other than Bouma, no real standouts for Calgary other than Deryk Engelland, which is just as weird

-After a pretty average game on zone entries against Carolina, San Jose came back with… another very average game. The Sharks did carry the puck in far more in this game than they usually do, but they didn’t generate a fantastic amount of offense off of their entries, as opposed to last game, where they generated nearly a shot attempt per controlled entry.

-Maybe it’s just a matter of my perceptions not matching reality, but Tierney has seemed to be a very dump-in-reliant player in the neutral zone this season, so it was good to see him have a 50% carry-in rate in this game.

-Other than Tierney, Nieto and Wingels had great games, providing value in the neutral zone as per the usual

-Calgary did very well carrying the puck through the neutral zone in this game

-A big contributor to this was Mikael Backlund, who continues to put up awesome numbers even when put in sub-optimal roles

-Gaudreau had a lot more success in the neutral zone this week than he did last week, but the Flames simply weren’t able to generate much offense off of his entries

-I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but once again Irwin-Tennyson put up good numbers defending against zone entries, while every one else put up pretty bad numbers

-Like in past matchups, the Sharks were able to carry the puck in against Russel and Wideman quite often in this game, averaging a 60% carry-in rate against both of them

-Although Giordano didn’t have nearly as much success as Brodie, Calgary’s top pair did pretty well at defending their blue line, letting San Jose carry the puck in on less than 50% of their entry attempts against that pair

-Though the Sharks only attempted three entries against him, kinda a brutal night for Diaz, who allowed carry-ins on all three of those entry attempts

-Pretty strong zone exit game for the Sharks, as their turnover count was pretty low, and their exit success% was pretty good

-Patty, Thornton and Tierney with good games

-Brodie with a solid game, which, combined with his solid scoring chances and zone entry targeting numbers show part of why he is easily one of the best young defensemen in the NHL today

-Backlund, Bouma, Monahan, and Wolf with solid games, though Calgary overall put up pretty bad numbers, turning the puck over on almost 40% of their touches
